The prominent use of archetypes in literature is especially evident in hero stories, for these patterns help the reader identify with the major characters. In John Knowles’ A Separate Peace (1959) and Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur (1889), these models help develop the characters into remarkable leaders. Though authors attempt to create original character in their works, often characters, such as King Arthur and Atticus, have “The Magician” and “The Ruler” archetypes in common.
An archetype is marked as a persistent symbol or motif in literature, art, or mythology.
Many authors use their characters to describe a specific archetype. A character archetype is made by using specific human qualities and traits. The first archetype used is the

For Gene, an example of when he is portrayed as a hero is in “Never accuse a friend of a crime if you only have a feeling he did it” (Knowles 66) This shows how gene is a ruler, as a ruler has qualities of a leader. A leader is honest and always does the right choices, which gets them into that leader position. In a way, this shows how he is a ruler because he is in a position of power, knowing if his friend is responsible for a crime. Gene states that one should not accuse a friend about a wrongdoing if there’s a feeling he was the one that did it. This place the situation in an uncomfortable condition, making it complicated for both the person and the friend.” Gene, on the other hand, seems to endure and even to thrive on his knowledge of evil” (Witherington) This also shows how Gene falls in The Ruler archetype. The quote shows how Gene mentally rises in power through his evil thoughts and manners, especially towards Finny. This further helps to show how much of a “ruler” he is, being similar to a Monarch ruler, as most of Monarch rulers were corrupt and evil, something that Gene is showing. Another example that shows that Gene is a “ruler” is “The Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session was a success from the start. That night Finny began to talk abstractly about it, as though it were a venerable, entrenched institution of the Devon School. The …show more content…
For King Arthur, an example of when he is portrayed as a hero is in “We will have Arthur unto our King, we will put him no more in delay for we all see that it is God’s will that he shall be our king”.(Malory 13) This is significant as even the people believe that King Arthur is the one who should be throne as King. They believe it’s God’s will that he was able to pull the sword out of the stone. King Arthur shows many leadership qualities such as responsibility, wisdom and value. “Then was Arthur wroth, and said to himself, I will ride to the church yard and take the sword with me that sticketh in the stone, for my brother Sir Kay shall not be without a sword this day.” This is relevant as King Arthur's brother, Sir Kay was going into battle but was sword less, concerned and dedicated, King Arthur decided to get the sword that was stuck in stone for his brother. With little to no effort, King Arthur was able to pull it out. That was something many of the people fathomed to do. This shows responsibility for King Arthur as even if it was not him going into battle, he was still responsible enough to attempt to get a sword for his brother. King Arthur also shows power as he achieved something that most people perceived as godly or
In many mythological pieces of literature, the reader will more likely to find some shape or form of archetypes. Although some may not be as in depth as others, or span over a much longer period of time. Archetypes are extremely common and if they were to not exist, some of these mythology stories being told may not be here today, or at least as interesting as they may seem. Thus seems to be the case here with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In this fantastic work written by Pearl poet, there has seemed to be inputted many specific details that allow the reader to image specific scenes and picturize characters among the story.
In two Arthurian Legends… “Excalibur” and “Merlin” the tales draw readers to the story with the great ideas of a hero, magic and Christian references. In both of these stories there are main points that are taken all the way through each story. There is also some variation through each story as well. The way each story is told is to attract the reader to this great legend and why we are still drawn to his story today. The movies “Excalibur” and “Merlin” both have a common factor, that factor being the way King Arthur is portrayed throughout the films.
In Morte d’ Arthur, Arthur is an exceptional leader. Arthur demonstrates many qualities of a good leader. A leader should treat others as their equal, should protect his followers, and should genuinely care for their followers. King Arthur does all of these things in just this little section of Morte d’ Arthur.
One way Gene’s jealousy and imitation is an effect on his relationship with Finny is that it caused lots of jealousy towards Finny because of his abilities, appearance, and actions. An example of this is when Gene stated “He had gotten away with everything. I felt a sudden stab of disappointment. That was because I just wanted to see some more excitement; that must have been it. " (Knowles).
King Arthur is one of the best kings that has ruled over Britain, throughout all of history. Arthur ruled with honor, loyalty, and chivalry, which made him a great king. Many lessons that he learned on his journeys helped him to become the person that he is. Arthur’s journey becoming king can be seen in the novel The Sword in the Stone by T.H. White, and is very similar to Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.
He is basically, through rhetorical questions, saying that he does not want to do what Finny does, but it’s like he cannot help it. This is affecting who Gene is as a person because he is not thinking for himself. Is Gene really even himself if Finny is doing the thinking for him? If he is not thinking for himself, he is not being true to himself. Another way that Gene is affected is that he allows his imitation of Finny get in the way of his schooling.
Freud's theories and research methods were controversial during his life and still are today, but few dispute his tremenWhat I understood by archetypes is that they are inborn behavior tendencies which shape the human behavior. Jung main archetypes are not 'types' in the way that each person may be classified as one or the other. Rather, we each have all basic archetypes within us. They are based in the observation of differing but repeating patterns of thought and action that re-appear time and again across people and different places, like in the form of some old myth, symbols, etc.
A tragic hero must have elements such as; nobility, wrong judgment, and an awful death as a result from wrongdoings. King Arthur is the king of Camelot and throughout his life he becomes very powerful and wealthy yet he makes some not so great decisions which harm him. An important element or a characteristic that a character must have to be distinguished as a tragic hero is nobility.

King Arthur was a great and well respected and king whom people looked up to and admired, not only for his leadership qualities, but his success and perseverance in protecting his kingdom. In the fifth and sixth century, the people of Britain lacked those admirable qualities in a king, so they clung to a story of a king that was commendable and doted on. The strife that the people of Britain were surrounded by between the Roman legions leaving and the invasion of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes while having such a terrible King in charge had a big effect on why King Arthur was such an admirable king. Growing up in the fifth and sixth century is what prompted the way of life, background, and reasons as to why King Arthur was such a benevolent

Was King Arthur a favorable leader in his time of ruling? In King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green, Arthur is a strong leader because he shows bravery, loyalty, and chivalry which are all trates an excellent leader should have. King Arthur is a brave king because he was who pulled the Excalibur from its stone, not any other knight nor king. He had to step up and become a leader without any notice and that takes bravery and strength. “(...)Without stopping to read what was written on the stone, Arthur pulled out the sword at a touch(…)” (p.7).
In literature, an archetype is known as a universal pattern that could be a character, theme, symbol, or a setting. Common archetypes can be used to analyze and contrast different works of literature.
