John Madden was born on April 10th, 1936 in Austin, Minnesota to Earl Russell Madden and Mary Margaret Flaherty. While living in Austin his father worked as a mechanic. He later moved to Daly City, California with his family in 1942 after living in Minnesota for about six years. In California his dad worked on airplanes as a mechanic.
John Madden went to High School at Jefferson High School in Daly City, California and was a three sport star in baseball, basketball, and football. After three seasons he ended up with an impressive 26-4 record. In 1967, Madden made the jump to the NFL by coaching the linebackers for the Oakland Raiders. Madden was coaching in the era of the legendary Vince Lombardi who was coaching for the Green Bay Packers at the time. In 1968, Madden faced Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers but lost by a score of 33-14.After two seasons, he was named Head Coach for the Oakland Raiders in 1969 at the age of 32. In 1969, Madden got a 12-1-1 record also when he was coaching he got the first seven division titles. Madden’s 1976, team which featured future Hall of Famers; Ken Stabler, Art Shell, and Gene Upshaw, ended up going a 13-1 record and the Oakland Raiders ended up defeating the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI.
