John Mc Mahon, 35 year old man married with two young children under the age of 10. There is history of hereditary factors in john’s family, his father suffers from depression following an injury to his back whilst working on the construction sites around Ireland 10 years previously and since then he has been unable to find employment because of his condition.
Relating back to John, he was once a successful business man, owning and running a chain of Italian Pizzeria restaurants with a big house and flashy car thrown into the mix, but since the recession hit Ireland, business has been poor, struggling to stay afloat with a mountain of unpaid bills like rent, suppliers and staff, whilst at home his mortgage & electricity bills are a constant

This is a greater number than deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, violence or tuberculosis.
• Alcohol is classified as a group 1 carcinogen and it is one of the most important causes of cancer in Ireland, being a risk factor in seven types of cancer. Ireland has the second highest rate in the world, (WHO and World Cancer Research Fund). Cancers of the mouth, upper throat, larynx, oesophagus, liver & bowel have a relationship to alcohol consumption.
Alcohol not only affects the individual drinker, but also affects others around them, including family, friends and co-workers. Young children are the most vulnerable which is the case with John, our individual from the case study. It is nearly seen as a way of life to his kids because it is an all too common occurrence. A pint of beer or a bottle of spirits may be seen as a healthy beverage to his young children, the way we view milk or water. There is the possibility of a knock on effect. This is why the parents and in our case john must take the bull by the horn and beat his problem. Another possibly far greater issue comes in terms of finance; the money being spent on alcohol would be best served providing adequate meals for the family or going towards seeking help to tackle the problem. Let’s not forget, johns business is suffering with the possibility of closure not too far away. This is the whole reason why he has turned to alcohol in the first
All the signs of an alcoholic is a cause by depending on alcohol. Health issues can present with a long term of alcohol abuse, liver disease, cardiovascular, pancreatitis, cancer, etc. Families and friends are affected as well, and advice is not considered or taken when in denial. Facing sobriety is not easy for most people to handle and I feel help is needed, and finding the proper treatment can be challenging for an alcoholic. Mrs. C. Torres lived a rough life and her addiction started at the age of 9 when her grandmother sends her to store to buy cigarettes and her daily drink, that was when she decided to have her first taste of alcohol.
On the surface, obsession and addiction can appear to be synonymous, but in reality, the two are distinctly different from one another. The reason the two are different is simple: an obsession is compulsion based on fear while addiction is compulsion based on desire/pleasure. [HOOK] Generally, obsession tends to be more mentally demanding and have irrational motives, such as believing that if you don’t brush your hair with three strokes on each side of your head all of your will hair fall out. On the other hand, an addiction gravitates more towards the physical and physiological desire for something or someone, as well as fantasizing about the substance, action, or person. This does not go without saying that a person cannot suffer from a combination
Throughout my whole life, my father has been an alcoholic. There have been times when he has tried to quit, but it never lasted for more than a few months. His addiction has brought on stressful times for my family. Some days we did not know where he was or if he was coming home. Although my father’s addiction might not have made the best childhood, he did show me the kind of person I did not want to be.
More teens that are found engaging in underage drinking. Americans today live a more comfortable lifestyle than before, where they don’t have to worry about things that are going within the state, country, continent, or yet even world because they are not as concerned about anything that doesn’t have a direct effect on the lives of citizens that aren’t in close relativity to themselves. In Brave New World the substance that is often being abused, not by personal choice but by government regulation, is a drug called Soma. Soma is the drug that everyone is forced to take to help regulate the birth rate and the emotions within the community. This substance is often known to have some negative effects on individuals within the
Today in the United States about 4,358 people under the age of 21 years old die each year from alcohol-related car crashes, homicides, suicides, alcohol poisoning, and other injuries such as falls, burns, and even drowning. More than 190,000 people under the age of 21 visited an emergency room for alcohol related reasons in 2008 alone. Alcohol related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and non-fatally injure someone every two minutes. That’s a lot of people gone because they wanted to go out and party and not think about the consequences ahead. In this essay I’m gonna give you information to why Underage Drinking is very very bad for you.
Last year’s figures show that three quarters of them got drunk, one in five passed out and a quarter of them injured themselves during the schoolies week. The effects of drugs and alcohol can highly affect young
The United States should lower the drinking age since it being 21 doesn't stop anyone. In the 70s the drinking age was 18 and it didn't make anyone a criminal. It would also generate a lot of money and since they made the age 21 a lot of teens have been binge drinking. The fact that colleges support lowering the drinking age tells you that it isn't a bad idea. A few of the colleges that support it are some of the best colleges in the U.S. like Duke, Dartmouth, and many more.
Millions of kids consume alcohol since young ages, we cannot allow that, this could cost problems for them in several aspects like educational problems, mental problems, and health problems. Having a healthy life without illness or problems is the most suggested for everyone, but how are going to take care of our kids if they are doing whatever they want with their lives?. Consuming alcohol at an early age could kill more young adults, bring up more car accidents, brain damage to our youth inexperienced generation, and alcohol's addiction. What are we going to do to stop this massive
Alcohol abuse and alcoholism seems like an issue that keeps getting increasingly worse each year in the United States. According to USA Today and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention both say that approximately 6 people die from alcohol poisoning, caused from binge drinking, each day, which amounts to roughly 2,200 people each year. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says that “In 2013 an estimated 697,000 adolescents ages 12–17 (2.8 percent of this age group) had an [alcohol use disorder]” (“Alcohol Facts”). Something has to stop and something has to change from preventing this more because 6 people dying each day from binge drinking alone is a lot, not to mention that 12-17 year olds are having alcohol problems at such a young age. Lowering the drinking age will enforce this act even more, promoting more drinking in fact.
Teaching children to drink safely starting while they’re 18 and living with their parents will help them develop healthy habits which will stick with them, helping them drink
Drugs such as alcohol have an effect on all users, regardless of their age; however, alcohol has an especially harmful effect on teens since their bodies are still developing. Studies have shown that alcohol has numerous negative effects on a teen’s body and mental health; for example, a study conducted by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention stated that “alcohol consumption affects the brain’s frontal lobes, which is essential for functions such as emotional regulations, planning, and organization” (“Age”). Teens already have high emotions and difficulties planning and organizing; alcohol will only enhance teens’ struggle. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention also found that alcohol consumption at a young age can potentially cause chronic problems such as memory loss, depression, suicidal thoughts, and poor decision making (“Age”). Teens have a difficult enough time making decisions and organizing their lives, but adding alcohol to the mix will only make matters worse; their bodies are still developing, and they are still learning to be adults.
Should an individual have their license revoked for a year after receiving a DUI? I believe that their licence should be revoked for a year. No one should ever get behind the wheel after they have been driving! It is estimated that in the state of ohio, more than 10,265 are killed each year as a result of drinking and driving.
It apears that children who exprienced drinking at young age will also continously and habitually drink in the future once they grow up. They do not simple do this occasionally but it has become a frequent and habitual addiction (Christiansen et al. 7). In totality, drinking alcoholic beverages of teenagers is not is unhealthy, unsafe, and unacceptable. More and likely teens that drink are trailing behind in their education because of how alcohol affects them so bad. Some parents allow their children drink alcoholic beverages under certain circumstances with their
Drinking exposure has begun as early as 12 years old, with girls drinking at around the age of 13 and boys at around the age of 11. The inclination to explore the usage of alcohol is caused by many factors such as trying to forget all of one 's problems, to gain confidence and the influence of other
