“I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud. I am not that man.” This quote was said by John Proctor in The Crucible, when he was thinking about confessing to “Witchcraft”. John Proctor was a victim of the Salem Witchcraft Trials. He is a very hard working farmer who loved his family with all his heart. He had an affair with Abigail Williams. He was hung and killed for being a “Witch”. John Proctor and I have similar personality traits in that we are both short tempered, family oriented and major sinners.
John Proctor and I portray our short-tempers in different ways. John Proctor shows his anger when he went too the courthouse. He got so angry at the court that he called Abigail a whore. He called her that because he had an affair with Abigail Williams. I displayed my short temper when I dragged my neighbor down a hill. On a summer night, my neighbors and their dad were over at our house. They were kicking my head while I was lying on the grass. I grabbed one of their legs and I pulled them toward me on a hill. Another example of my short-temper would be when I beat up my brother. On a school day a couple of days before our birthday, My brother was making fun of me in physical science. After we got home, I threw some punches at him and he started to tear up. He started to punch back while I was apologizing to him.

John Proctor went to the courthouse with Giles Corey and Francis Nurse so they could save their wives. Elizabeth Proctor, Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse all got arrested for Witchcraft. I am family oriented because I do a family activity every weekend. Last weekend, My Mom, Dad, Brothers and went to Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland in the Big Butler Fair Ground. One more example of how I am heavily family oriented is I help my family cook most dinners. I help my parents make anything from ham and turkey to mashed potatoes and
John Proctor is a farmer and he is married to Elizabeth Proctor. Proctor is a strong and stern man who hates hypocrites and hypocrisy. Throughout this book Proctor tries to pull off being the well put together man that he has been raised to be and that he has been his whole life. However, this all fails when he commits a sin, one that is one of the worst things to do during this time period. He had an affair with the young Abigail Williams.
John Proctor is a witch who participates in adultery. John Proctor was the very sole reason for the hysteria in Salem. If it were not for him, the witch trials would have never happened. He could have ended the mass hysteria in Salem by coming out about everything sooner, ending things with Abigail who was, in fact, a minor, and being a man and putting a stop to it all since he had the power to do so. Proctor was initially a well-respected member of the community.
John Proctor’s strengths is that, “He is a kind of man—powerful body, even-tempered, and not easily led—who cannot refuse support to partisans without drawing their deepest resentment” (Miller 1245). His major flaw is not forgiving himself after having an affair with Abigail, which caused a riff to happen in his marriage. This flaw led Proctor to not fully cut off ties with Abigail, out of guilt, making her believe that they had a chance of truly being together if Elizabeth wasn’t there anymore. John Proctor transforms from a selfish character that only cares for his image to a man who will die for his beliefs and to prove the corrupt ways of the court to save many lives of innocent people. His inner conflict is how he views himself, “My honesty
John Proctor is another character who encounters the effects of groupthink trying to define him. John is a local farmer who is married to Elizabeth Proctor and is a very strong and independent man. He also fears that people will associate his name with sin, which may impact his decision not to plead guilty to witchcraft. Acknowledging that he tries to be a man of God, he confessed to having an affair with Abigail, which jeopardized his marriage and put his reputation of being a man of God at risk.
John Proctor is introduced as a married farmer who had a scandalous affair with his servant Abigail Williams. This horrible act of adultery has left him damaged and confused on how to move forward with his life. Likewise, he is haunted by his sin, Abigail serving as a constant reminder to his flawed decision. John says to Abigail, “ I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again”(Miller 1140), which shows his resolve and the loyalty he is trying to give his wife.
These characters are usually very prideful, but are intelligent and learn something at the end of the story. The tragic hero of The Crucible is John Proctor, whose flaw is that he had committed adultery with Abigail Williams, due to the cold nature of his wife. The events that led to his fall first start when his wife is arrested for witchcraft. He is extremely angered by this unfair arrest and rips the warrant, screaming, “Off with you!” (72) as they try to take custody of her.
One major character trait of John Proctor was his honesty. When John Proctor found out about the accusations, he looked for the truth. Once he was told by Abigail Williams that the witch accusations were not true, he went to court with Mary Warren to tell the Judges the truth. When the Judges started questioning him, he admitted his affair with Abigail Williams, which put his name at risk.
John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better.
John Proctor’s character is one based on reputation, and guilt. The guilt comes from his affair with Abigail Williams. The reputation aspect comes from when he is accused by Mary Warren of trying to turn her to the Devil. I believe that John Proctor grows tired of the accusations, as to why he speaks of his false involvement with Satan in front of the town. Specifically, Deputy Danforth uses John Proctor as an example for conviction as he is certain he will be able to turn others
Proctor is widely respected in the Salem community. However, he has a secret that threatens his reputation. He cheated on his wife Elizebeth Proctor with Abigail Williams. As a result, he has a strong internal conflict regarding his integrity. Proctor is a benevolent man at heart, however he has sinned according to puritan law.
Another reason why John Proctor is such a Flawed man is because he is so quick to anger. He get mad very easily and he goes off on people to make them feel like a bad person when they didnt do anything wrong. Like Elizabeth every night he tries to talk to him and he yells at her because she ask to many questions or she doesn 't do it the right
John Proctor's main flaw was his excessive pride which sealed his fate. I myself felt his death transformed Salem’s ways of thinking and increased their own knowledge. Proctor's life completely started going downhill when Abigail accused John’s loved ones who then were sent to jail, or executed. John Proctor was a man of goodness and pride which cleansed his soul after he suffered a tragic death, and became a symbol of purity and greatness for others to
The first impressive characteristic of John Proctor is his bravery. Speaking out against the “afflicted” girls in the way he did could cause serious question of him as a person. From the court’s standpoint John could be seen as directly opposing the court, which would have him jailed, or could even have him be accused of witchcraft. Also, he would have had to have known that Abigail Williams would have immediately accused him of being a witch once he spoke out against them. However, that did not stop him from delivering the truth to the court.
John Proctor displayed his character traits of aggression and anger throughout the story in fear of his integrity being ruined. He was considered a tragic hero because of his downfall in trying to protect his integrity. Even though Elizabeth Proctor had the traits of innocence and compassion she still lacked affection towards her husband. This in turn led John to commit adultery with their housekeeper. These two characters demonstrate these traits throughout the story.
John Proctor is well liked and respected in the Puritan community and is trusted by everyone. In Act I, on page 1269, It says “Proctor, respected and even feared in Salem, has come to regard himself as a kind of fraud.” This quote shows that John has a lot to lose if his secret gets out because everyone looks up to him. Although John is a great man, his tragic flaw is his pride.
