“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth the evil things” (KJV, Matt. 12:35). What makes a good man? A good man is one who follows Christ in every way that he can. Is he perfect? No; the Bible states, “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” (KJV, Eccles. 7:20). Therefore, any good man will sin at some point. A good man will ask God for mercy, however. John Proctor did have an affair with Abigail Williams, which is committing adultery and that is disobeying God’s Seventh Commandment. Proctor asked the Lord for forgiveness and he is now just and true to his wife, Elizabeth. John Proctor is a good man because he is now …show more content…
Abigail comes to John asking him to continue where they had left off with their affair but John refused. She offered to him to come to Barbados with her but he turned her down then, also. He told her in the movie, The Crucible, that he would not dare do unto his wife again what he once did to her. John Proctor said to Abigail, “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time, but I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again.” This quote from the movie shows that John Proctor was once a sinful man, but now however, displays him as honest and loyal to Elizabeth …show more content…
He knew that he could get out of being hung if he would admit to witchcraft, but he would not do so because it would be a lie and to lie is to sin. However, to save his wife, he decides that he has no choice. Judge Danforth and a few others come to John and asked him if he had seen numerous people with the devil and John would not say yes to any. He says that he is guilty of witchcraft and they ask him to sign a paper stating so and they would nail it to the church door. John signed the paper but regretted it immediately afterwards. He begged for them to not nail it to the church door but they said that they must and they asked him why he would confess verbally but did not want his name hanging on the doors of the church. To this, John Proctor says, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” John Proctor is quite blunt and frank towards everyone, which are normally not always the best qualities to have. He calls them as he sees them. Constantly, John Proctor refers to Abigail Williams as a whore. He knew that Mary Warren had never seen the devil and called her out on it, but for only just reasons. John Proctor wanted what was best for him and his family, as well as the rest
Is a good name more important than the truth? In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor and Reverend Parris are both concerned with their reputation. In the play, Proctor and Parris both try to keep their reputation clean in different ways. Parris tries to deny witchcraft used by his daughter and Proctor won’t lie about being innocent even if it means death.
If he was to confess of witchcraft he would have been free but his good name in the village would have made other less prominent people in village to confess lies. John had never spoken with the devil and neither had the others in the village but the only way of getting out of hanging was confessing of witchcraft. Instead of taking the easy way out Proctor and confess, he took the high road saving his family’s good name for future generations (his 3 sons). Although Proctor’s family name was saved he was not and hung in the end of the
I did not... I did not” (Miller). This shows that John Proctor has an iron will and a good sense of values
Then, John was accused of witchcraft. He was given the choice to tell the truth and be prosecuted or confess to a crime he didn’t commit and be set free. He chose to tell the truth and got sent to jail. During this time, he said “... what is John Proctor? I think it is honest” (page 138).
John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better.
The first decision that John Proctor made was having an affair with Abigail Williams. In the beginning of “The Crucible”, Abigail realizes that she may love John, however John believes that they never
The Crucible - Conflict Analysis John Proctor Internal: John Proctor’s most eminent internal conflict is over the sin he has committed, adultery. Proctor cheated on his wife with Abigail Williams, and this makes Proctor feel incredibly guilty because in the town, he is “respected and even feared” (19). He tried very hard, and succeeded, with keeping this moral crime to himself. He still walked about Salem as if he was “an untroubled soul,” (21) however, avoiding the sin again would be a difficult task. Abigail flirts with him, in attempt to have him for one last night, and it’s obvious Proctor has an arduous time pushing her away.
Because I cannot have another one in my life!... Proctor tears the paper and crumples it. ”(143 & 144) This quote proves that John Proctor preserved his dignity and soul, and followed his moral compass in doing the right thing. Contributing to the previous detail, “I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor...
In Salem years ago an innocent man by the name of John Proctor was hung. He was accused of witchcraft, the American playwright Arthur Miller distinguished him as a man powerful of body, even tempered and not easily led. John Proctor is good, because he loves his family, understands the truth, and repents to his sin and shows loyalty to his wife. Proctor didn’t attend church regularly like he should have been. I assume he spent more time with his family than anyone else since he wasn’t involved with the church.
"The only difference between the saint and the sinner is that every saint has a past and every sinner has a future." — Oscar Wilde. John Proctor was not a sinner, and he was not a saint. He was merely a human being. As such, human beings do things that they are not proud of, and they can accomplish some amazing tasks. This is something one can be positive about in life.
Is John Proctor a good man? From the very beginning of The Crucible, he has shown himself to be a charismatic and powerful man who is not afraid to state what is on his mind. These traits would make him out to be a righteous man to question the motives of those who accuse others of witchcraft. But his affair with the young Abigail Williams taints him because of the facts that he is hypocritical over the same sin he committed. However, in the end, John Proctor proves to be a good man with pure intentions...
John Proctor’s character is one based on reputation, and guilt. The guilt comes from his affair with Abigail Williams. The reputation aspect comes from when he is accused by Mary Warren of trying to turn her to the Devil. I believe that John Proctor grows tired of the accusations, as to why he speaks of his false involvement with Satan in front of the town. Specifically, Deputy Danforth uses John Proctor as an example for conviction as he is certain he will be able to turn others
After cheating on his wife with Abigail Williams, the villain of the story, John knows that he has made an error and is determined to leave the past behind him stating, “… I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again” (Miller 1261). Proctor knows that he has made a grave mistake, and it has haunted him ever since he has reached for her. His very character is permanently flawed by his
John Proctor is a good man despite anything others may say about him. He displays three very noble qualities throughout the witch trials which are bravery, honesty, and an overall goal to save lives even to the point where he sacrificed his. While many argue John is a bad man because he committed adultery they are entirely mistaken. Just because he had one bad sin gives no right to anybody to call him a bad person when clearly the good side of him is shown more than the bad. John Proctor is a good man who displays the characteristics of a hero and could be seen as one for giving his life for his friends.
This quote is small but I used it because it has a big meaning when he says he given them his soul he doesn’t mean little art but he means but him signing the letter everyone will look at him as a witch he family will be hated and he wouldn’t be a led to forgive himself. He just wanted to sign the paper and e don e but they wanted to use him as an example to the community. John proctor does the right thing by tearing up the confession because it solves his inner problems
