When reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller, some might think that John Proctor is a good and honest man right? Wrong. John Proctor is nothing but a fraud, a scoundrel; and even though he is respected and sometimes even feared in Salem, he has come to think of himself as a bit of a fraud. Although a sinner, Proctor keeps his secret of adultery from everyone in Salem. Abigail, John’s secret lover, and a group of girls were seen dancing in the forest. Abigail confesses about dancing with all of the girls, “Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Punman’s dead sister.” She also mentions if any of them mention anything else, that she would come to them at night and would bring a reckoning to them. When talking about the ‘other stuff,’ Abigail is referring about the rest of them knowing …show more content…
Meanwhile, when Proctor and Abigail were alone and talking, Abigail tells Proctor that she has some sense that he has been looking up her window at night. Proctor does not want to admit that Abigail and him have touched so he tells her, “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut my hand off before I’ll ever reach for you again.” When Proctor tells of this, he is basically admitting that him and Abigail have in fact had an affair. At the same time, Proctor and his wife are visited by Rev. Hale to see if the Proctor household is good, and when asked to recite the 10 commandments, John forgets one and repeats the same one twice, “Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods, nor make unto thee any graven image... Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” When John repeats the same one, Hale calls him out on it and Elizabeth has to remind him of final
John admitted to the court and the town that he had an affair with Abigail Williams. John also refused to lie to save his life, instead he kept the truth and his pride and he hanged for it. The fact that he would rather die than to slaughter his family’s name, that says a lot, to me it says that he was thinking of his wife and kids instead of himself. If I haven’t made myself clear yet, I believe John Proctor is the most courageous character in The Crucible.
After the trials were finished they immediately started hanging the list of people that were convicted of the crimes. John Proctor being one of those people, was not yet hanging but he was being held captive. Abigail visits him and tries to apologies and get him to run off with her. He turns her down and says he would rather go to hell then run off with her. Abigail apologies and tells him
Abigail threw Tituba under the bus, never owning up to her role in the drinking of the blood or the
In Arthur Miller’s book, “The Crucible” there is one character who stands out from the rest, who catches your attention throughout the story, and his name is John Proctor. A tragic hero is a member of the community that has a tragic flaw that eventually will lead straight to a tragic fail. Through his good and bad deeds, his adultery, and his stuck up pride, would Mr. John Proctor be considered a tragic hero? John Proctor is a very prominent man in this community. He helps work the fields, he takes the load of people who can’t do it, and he is just all around a town favorite.
John Proctor was the protagonist character of The Crucible, who had some major issues. Mr. Proctor has cheated on his wife, he can't remember the entire ten commandments, even though he goes to church every week, he's was as stubborn as a mule, and he was angry majority of the time. In my opinion, John Proctor is the the tragic hero of this book for demonstrating bravery, integrity, and protectiveness of self image. Early on in the story Mr. Proctor was always known for thinking highly of one’s reputation, however, this single trait allowed him to protect the one he loved which was his wife Elizabeth. Regardless of the fact that he cheated on her and she suspected that something was going on between her husband and Abigail, he still wanted
First, Hale comes to Salem and find out about the dancing. Abigail, not caring who she has to hurt, blames Tituba (Parris’ servant from Barbados). Tituba, now trying to save herself, confirms she sees the Devil and asks for help from Hale. Abigail uses this as the perfect opportunity to strengthen her lie and claims she “...Danced for the Devil… [She] saw Sarah Good with the Devil!”
The Crucible has many different themes. One of the major themes in “The Crucible” is preserving one’s reputation. Three Characters who show this theme are John Proctor, Reverend Parris, and Governor Danforth. John Proctor has a good reputation which he wants to keep in tact. This causes events that will get him hung at the end of the play.
The Crucible Essay In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, John Proctor is facing the decision of living but ruining his friends’ reputation as well as his own, or dying and defending the remaining amount of his goodness. Proctor chooses the ladder and dies to protect his friends and himself to prove he still has some goodness and for forgiveness of his past sins. What makes his claim believable is the fact that John Proctor refuses to give Danforth the confession with the argument that he would like to defend his name, and his friend’s name aswell. As he states “They think to go like saints.
Through the development of the character John Proctor from The Crucible, Arthur Miller strives to portray the extent of the effects leading to the downfall of a great man who made a single human error of adultery which evolved into a mass hysteria of his community and personal life. These unfortunate events changed him from an honest, upstanding community man to the shell of a man that no longer felt worthy in the eyes of his wife or god, and then back to an honorable, honest man who left this world with immense dignity and integrity. John Proctor was a hard-working farmer who took great pride in himself, his family, and farm. He was a loving father and husband to a wife and three children. He was a very righteous, dedicated, and prideful
Here she is showing that she cares what people say about her and tries to hide the truth. In the beginning of the play , Abigail and a few girls were caught dancing naked in the woods . She gets all the girls to lie for her by threatening them saying, “ And mark this . Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word , about the other things , and I will come to you in the black of the terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you...” (Miller19).
(Miller, 20). Here, the audience sees Abigail’s true side and how she now has control over her group of friends. Abigail used the witch trials to get an accusation against Elizabeth for her self-interests, and John can see that. John is able to bring Mary to her senses, and motivates her to tell the truth to the court, but Abigail stands in her way. While Mary is attempting to confess, Abigail is able to control the other fearful girls and scare Mary from testifying and telling the truth, allowing Abigail to get what she pleased.
And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” (317). Abigail is trying to convince herself that this is all she did with the girls even though, in reality, she knows they did much more. She does this in order to make herself feel less guilt towards the situation. She knows the trouble she will get into so she chooses to
John Proctor is a good person, he may have had an affair with Abbigail, which does make him a cheater and a liar, but he is also passionate, and tries to make amends with Elizabeth and get past the affair. In the story when John and Abbigail are alone talking, John says “Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin’ for more.” He says that because he is basically saying he isn’t going to cheat ANYMORE, stating that he has already done it. That shows he is a cheater and not loyal to his wife Elizabeth.
The fact that Abigail has this much power, not just in the court, but over other people as well helps her to essentially control the whole
In his book titled Poetics, Greek philosopher Aristotle expressed his ideas about tragedy. These ideas have been embraced, studied, and considered for hundreds of years. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the main character John Proctor fits the definition of a tragic hero. Throughout the play, examples of Aristotle’s ideas are displayed through what John Proctor does and says. The most significant examples are towards the climax and the end of the play.
