One of the many psychologists who played a key role in developing behaviorism was John Broadus Watson. Watson was born on January 9, 1878 to Emma Watson and Pickens Watson in Greeneville, South Carolina. He believed psychology should mainly be a science of observable behavior. He believed animals and humans learned all behaviors through environmental factors. Watson had to grow up fast after his father left him and his mother and entered Furman University at the age of sixteen. Five years later he graduated with a master's degree and began studying psychology at the University of Chicago.
