Evidence shows that the Puritans had politically influenced their colonies with their religious values. In the New World, a group of Puritans established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. There, the Puritans would create a government that would revolve around their covenant with God. On the way to the New World, John Winthrop, governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, led a sermon, titled “A Model of Christian Charity”, about Puritan ideals (Winthrop). As well as determining Puritan ideals, the sermon urges colonists to unite as a “city on a hill” for others to look up to (Winthrop).
In my opinion, I believe that John Winthrop is trying to explain that inequality is a fact of nature that should be accepted by all. I say this because when reading "A Model of Christian Charity" he is always explaining no matter what class or if this person is an enemy we should be treating them with respect and taking care of them if they are in need. This goes for the wealthy helping with the poor and vice versa. He portrays in his writing that at any time someone might need help from another being, and this will keep people closer together no matter what status. I do feel that these views are applicable in America today especially with what the world is going through with race today.
In Jon Sweeney’s lecture and book, “ When Saint Francis Saved The Church”, he spoke about Francis leading a revolutionary life. There were two points that helped support with Francis leading a revolutionary life. Those points were friendship and poverty. Sweeney spoke about how important friendship and poverty was to Francis. These points helped with Francis learning what kind of person he would be and do with his life.
Marywood University incorporates a mission statement where they base a campus state of well-being off a list of core values including, empowerment, service, excellence, catholic identity and respect. We are working towards a goal in a community at Marywood that presents these core values as a set of words to live by on campus, but in our hearts we have to connect meaning to them. Sometimes, it might be hard as a college freshman to know these words by their definition but rather what they mean to them and how they can actually put them into action. The book “A Good Man” and the speech “This is Water” represent the Marywood core value of Excellence in two completely different ways in which a Good Man represents the physical actions of Excellence
He had poured everything into maintaining the “godly fervor” of the continental Army. Washington favored Leonard so much that he asked the pastor’s congregation if they would allow Abiel to stay for an extended tour and continue preaching the importance of the faith of god upon the
John Winthrop book “A Model of Christian Charity” was a very interesting piece to read. This was one of his most famous pieces of work by Winthrop and I like that he wrote this and his journal on the ship he was on in 1630. I admired this piece because it was well thought out, and is respected by many people for centuries. His goal was to help past and future people for a better strong, new society in which he hopes will succeed. Also, he would combine pieces from the bible into his work that would help show them what he was trying to say, and Winthrop gave people with reading his book, answers to their questions.
In the painting “Jamestown Lifescape” Keith Rocco uses precise details to convey the theme that cooperation and unity are indispensable to the survival of a thriving community. For instance, citizens are rolling the barrels of goods to the ships in order to send the supplies to other lands. The people of Jamestown are using teamwork by rolling the barrels to sell/distribute stock to other countries in order to sustain an economy by trading goods. To keep a strong economy, countries must maintain healthy relationships with other countries. To demonstrate, residents are working as a whole to finish construction, and keep the town growing.
The Puritan’s voyage to the New World was recorded in “Of Plymouth Plantation” by William Bradford. The Puritans made this voyage to escape the persecution they were facing in Europe and in hopes of starting a new life that would exert their right to religious freedom. The Puritans believed God’s active and persistent “hand” was present in all aspects of their lives. It was the grace of God that was the sole explanation of every daily occurrence or event. God created everything and therefore he played a significant role in the lives of the Puritans.
William Bradford left his home to find found a new establishment that accepted his separatist beliefs and honored God. The rumor of wealth and prosperity drew John Smith toward Jamestown. The desire for an establishing a new life in America was important to both
