The phrase “manifest destiny” was in the air, exciting United State citizens. President James Polk declared that it was America’s right to expand to the Pacific Ocean. However, the land west from Texas was Mexican soil. As a result, the United States asked to buy the California territory. When Mexico declined their offer, President James Polk needed an excuse to go to war with Mexico to steal California right from underneath them. Polk spread the rumor that it was their “manifest destiny” to extend America’s territory to the Pacific Ocean. Historians today ask the question: Was the United States justified in going to war with Mexico? The United States was not justified, because the United States were greedy for land, “manifest destiny” is weak excuse, and because of the human cost.

The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought on December 11-15th 1862. The Potomac Union soldiers, commanded by Ambrose Burnside, came into battle with over 100,000 soldiers ready for combat. For the Confederacy, the number of soldiers was about half of the Union’s amount with only around 70,000. This battle was the first Urban battle of the war, forcing citizens and families out of their homes and some into the woods. The Battle begins with General Burnside planning to attack the Union army but ended up failing because of a miscommunication at the Rappahannock River between general Burnside and general Halleck. During the dilemma for the Union, the Confederacy was able to occupy a strong position at Marye’s Heights. After the Union crossed, Burnside ordered his left wing to attack Lee’s right. General Meade of the Union then was able to temporarily break Jackson’s line but failed to send more troops in to capitalize on it. In return the Union army was defeated by Jackson. The Battle of Vicksburg was one of the most crucial points in the Civil War. It helped Eradicate the Rebels/Confederacy once and for all. The Civil War was fought for over 4 years and it lasted from 1861-1865. It was one of the most horrific wars the world has ever known and witnessed. The Civil war was fought over the topic of slavery and the issues it presented, and the injustifications of slavery. The Civil War was one of the longest and hardest wars ever fought. The Siege of Vicksburg was won by Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederate General in the Battle of Vicksburg was John C. Pemberton. Pemberton’s troops made him surrender to Grant because the troops were starving to death (literally) and so he surrendered on July 4th, 1863. This was a major day in history.

The Stonewall riots are widely believed to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States. There were many battles during the American Revolutionary War. Some were more important than others, and some lasted longer than others. The Battles of Saratoga and Yorktown were both very important and somewhat long. The battle of Saratoga was important because this was the changing point for the colonists. The battle of Yorktown was important because it was the final battle in the whole war. Saratoga lasted for about a month, and Yorktown lasted for about 20 days.

On a warm day in New York City in 1911, tragedy struck. The Ohio National Guard came to Kent State University because the students there were holding an anti-war rally(PUBLISHED). The Ohio National Guard shot 13 students that day(PUBLISHED).

In the first week of January in 1923 a racially motivated riot occurred int he small town of Rosewood, Florida. This riot escalated into a violent massacre that slaughtered many African Americans as well as Caucasians and lead to the demise of the entire town that had been established. This event became to be known as one several race riots that occurred in the United States of America during the early twentieth century. The events prior to the Rosewood Massacre, including the origins of the town, the massacre itself and the issues and events that were sub sequential to this catastrophic event all played a major role in the history of African Americans.

The 1950s to the 1980s were a time filled with social change within the US. These people fought for deserved justice in multiple places of controversy, such as race. The Siege of Yorktown , most known as the Battle of Yorktown , which was a military conflict between Great Britain and 13 colonies in North America during the revolutionary war , October 9,1781 at the battle field in Yorktown , Virginia . The battle was a great victory for the colonists . This was where Lord Cornwallis the British general surrendered to George Washington general of the Continental Army and De Rochambeau general of the French Army . The British army was defeated .
