During my undergraduate years at Loyola, I worked in the office of First and Second Year Advising as a Peer Advisor in the University 101 classroom. I taught a Bridge to Loyola course in which many of my students were first-generation students of color. Looking back on my experience, I now realize how I could have used the framework of intersectionality, or Critical Race Theory (CRT), in order to give these students a more meaningful classroom experience. Not So Fast” Andrea Lunsford researched students’ writing for 30-plus years to see what effect new technology has on how students learn. Lunsford discovered that students are actually improving their own writing skills with the help of mass media. Not only does it allow students more access to educational resources and information, but it also encourages students to do more creative thinking and writing outside of class which Lunsford refers to in her article as “life writing.” In her research she recalls the account of a student who sent a friend a text message which was completely informal and would be considered unprofessional by most piers. However, the same student also sent a very formal and professional report to her faculty adviser later on. The reason Lunsford includes this account of events is because it proves that while mass media might seem like its dumbing down the younger generation it is actually teaching them different kinds of writing and when to use different contexts.
Participants were required to release their grade and SAT transcripts. The pen pal conditions groups were randomly assigned to the malleable intelligence orientation or the control orientation. All laboratory sessions began the same way with the white female experimenter informing participants that she works for an organization called “Scholastic Pen Pals” and that the role of this organization is to set up one-time letter exchanges between “at risk” middle school students with college students. I learned about thinking intentionally through AP English Language and Composition class. From the beginning of class, we talked about intentionality, both in reading and writing. Reading intentionally means that you are thinking and questioning about how the writer uses that word, phrase, or syntax to build its argument, whereas writing intentionally refers to you are questioning yourself why you choose that word, phrase, or syntax to persuade your audience. In the past two months, I started to think of how the diction build up the tone of the writer, how each sentence and paragraph work rhetorically, and how all these elements together persuade the audience.
