During the Spaniards’ government in the Philippines, our country faced countless problems to the extent that it needs a reformation. According to Dr. Jose Rizal’s article that was published in the La Solidaridad on December 15, 1890, which was the “Como Se Gobiernan Las Filipinas”(How One Governs in the Philippines), “the causes to which the misgovernment and the slow death of the country are attributed depend on who studies them”. In here, he mentioned 4 major causes, which are the following: (1) the friars, (2) the liberals, (3) the government officials and (4) the Filipinos.

According to Rizal, the Filipino natives are partly to blame because they lack of national settlement and didn't completely showed patriotism to the country because of fear. Jose Rizal, the Spanish rulers’ method of governing a conquered country was a failure because it led to a lot of negativity and they used the Philippines as an advantage instead of educating the people of it and developing it through the science of self-government. In fact, they abused the Filipino people by means of exploitation because they required them to work for labor and military services. During their governance, there’s an existing law that if you say something against the government it is considered as a crime, which violates the right of the people to voice out their thoughts about the government. The fact that these Reformers stuck to their beliefs even when people were being banished for their Protestant views was further evidence that these people of the Reformation had strong beliefs in it. “Between 1525 and 1535 a number of English reformers were living in exile in Europe, unwelcome in Henrician England.” Youth who did not truly believe in the Reformation would not have had this type of commitment.
