Lister was horrified by the dangers of operations, and he decided that he was going to make operations safer. What were his/her greatest accomplishment? - Lister’s greatest accomplishment was making operations and surgeries extremely safer. He learned that microorganisms caused infection. To stop this, he created methods of cleaning and dressing wounds with a solution of carbolic acid, and it decreased the occurrence of gangrene remarkably. He also introduced the sterilization of surgical objects including the use of heat and carbolic acid. During the Civil War, the grotesque and gruesome injuries plagued the battlefield. Medicine was in its infancy and very few advances had been made. Even basic procedures and some techniques that common people are taught today, were not developed. The problem of only having basic medicine became a problem in saving the lives of the wounded soldiers.
