Journal Entry 1: We are gathering at the camp to prepare for a speech from General George Washington. He began, “We are not much of a match for the British Army, but I know that our determination can win this.” Every time General George Washington gives us a speech it makes me want to fight even more. Washington continues, “We don’t have much food left or guns for that matter.” He adds, “But I assure you the Congress is sending us supplies as we speak!” It’s been almost 2 days since I’ve gotten to eat any meals, I’ve been wearing this same pair of clothes for 1 month now, and I sleep in holes that gain water overnight. Journal Entry 2: We are preparing to take over Trenton, but General George Washington is preparing to give another speech. General George Washington begins, “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in the crisis shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it NOW; deserves the love and thanks of men and women.” He keeps going, “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.” He paused, giving everyone a second to let it sink in. He is such a great leader he reminds me of a friend rather than a harsh squad leader.
