The Joyful Heart Foundation was established by Mariska Hargitay, an actress mostly known for her role as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit. The role that she played gave her insights to the glaring statistics on the sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse in the United States. She received numerous responses from victims of such violence and established the foundation as a way of responding to the thousands of letters and emails she received from the audience. She then received numerous letters from victims of domestic and sexual violence some of which were talking for the first time. Mariska Hargitay was touched by their stories and could not ignore all the letters. She wanted to respond to all of them and thus formed a foundation that will help more victims. The foundation, therefore, reflects on her genuine love and willingness to intervene on behalf of the helpless in the society. In my school, a girl named Shelby died fighting cancer. Our school did everything in their power to help her family, a family that had decided to raise money to help not only themselves but other families that are fighting cancer. They started selling bracelets, shirts, and other merchandise to raise money. “Fight like a girl,” this was their title. Everyone knew of Shelby and how strong she had been.
