Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads. In turn, he provides his own rules for escaping the western diet as well as the idea of nutritionist set forth by scientists. Then Pollan explains that scientific theories of nutritionist focus on individual nutrients rather than foods as a whole. He further goes on to refute this claim mentioning that these scientific theories contradict with one another. Pollan explains “the scientists who blame our health problems on deficiencies of [micronutrients] are not the same scientists who see a sugar soaked diet leading to metabolic syndrome and from there to diabetes, heart disease…” (Pollan, 421).

I enjoyed the topic of the Annotation 1 worksheet, because I personally disagreed with the stance of the author. The Article argues that disallowing welfare users to spend their food stamp money on sugary drinks would allow users to lead healthier lives, but I do not think that the situation is that black and white. According to the article, “They would still receive every penny of support they now get, meaning they would have as much, if not more, to spend on nutritious food” (Farley). I believe that health can be a social construct, and what might be healthy to one person might not be healthy to another, and banning sugary drinks, does not mean that welfare users will go further in the act and make healthier decisions about everything purchased.
Comparing these beverages to alcohols, the only difference one may be able to identify is that alcohol is not marketed to minors whereas these caffeine-rich products are, which just makes the case worse. Which is also why I strongly think there should be a legal drinking age be imposed on energy drinks. We being the educated individuals that we are, should become more vigilant. Knowledge is power and alerting each other to the possible danger of these beverages is vital. Moralizing nutrition is not healthy for people or society, but society does have a responsibility to provide accurate information concerning food. Maxfield believes that, weight, diet and health have no correlation. Meaning that there are more components to health then just what you eat. I agree with maxfield on that because there are so many factors to consider when talking about health. Not only does shaming people out of eating not work, but it also causes long term harm.
In her mind, if we skipped the “dieting”, and just ate healthy we wouldn’t need to go to the doctors so often. It turns out, as always, mom was right, natural is in fact, better. In the documentary Forks Over Knives, it states that, natural may work better than chemically made pills or anti-biotics. Products made in the lab tend to be addictive and short term at best. Not mention the fact that these substances are completely foreign and hard for our bodies to stomach.
Media contradicts itself a little, due to the fact that they want you to look a certain way but the advertisements on unhealthy food choices are so big. The market on unhealthy eating is mind blowing dangerous, causing the population not to caring about the food they put into their bodies. Theres a very fine line when talking about body images and looking at what the “in thing” is in the media.
