Upon entry to my exchange program in the United States, I was placed in a Junior Algebra Honors class despite of my previous completion of the course back in China. Accordingly, the tests were relatively simple. Shortly after a unit test began, I completed it and handed it in to the teacher confidently. This took a turn for the worst however, as she had associated my quickness with cheating. This was obviously not the case, yet she insisted it true. No evidence had proven me guilty of such acts and on advice from my host family, I switched classes; this was an opportunity for me to regain my dignity. I asserted myself and requested to be advanced to the AP calculus course, of which I had been unaware. After strenuous study and aid from volunteer
Why you Don’t Need to be Smart to Get Good Grades Sophomore year, AP U.S. History. My class was writing a Document Based Question (DBQ) over Christopher Columbus and the Age of Exploration. (A document based question is an essay where you use factual evidence given in the form of documents to write an essay). I knew nothing! My mind was blanker than the vacuum of space itself.
Module Three Rough Draft One of the most common problems in our schooling system is that students cheat. This happens a lot with older students who struggle with the topic that their assignment is on. In “The Shadow Scholar” by Ed Dante, and “Introduction: Fraud and Fundamental Misunderstandings” by Shane Borrowman shows how students cheat to move on in their education. In both of these texts the authors tell their first-hand stories of their different students cheating.
My experience in English 1010 was great. My writing skills were very poor at the beginning of the semester. I did not know how to write correct sentence structure. I had great difficulties making my sentences flow smoothly and clearly. I was not able to edit a paragraph for mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
There is an ongoing debate about whether or not the honor code, a code that obliges students to report academic dishonesty of their fellow peers, is strict enough, with many students claiming they feel that their privacy is being violated, and others worrying that requiring reporting cheating to superiors will cause friction amongst the student body. Others claim that with the abundance of recent statistics of high level cheating and plagiarism, a stricter honor code is a necessity. While it is important to respect the student’s privacy, and maintain an ideal learning environment, the fact remains that the honor code, as it is currently, is underperforming, and that stricter measures need to be taken, for the sake of a fairer learning environment. The main contention of the test takers seems to be that being closely watched and supervised make them feel uncomfortable and invalidated.
An honor code can be so effective that “many schools with academic honor codes allow students to take their exams without proctors present, relying on peer monitoring to control cheating” (Source F). Despite this system, there is research that “indicates that the significantly lower levels cheating” (Source F) at schools with honor codes. This is possible because there is a peer culture that denounces cheating, making kids embarrassed to commit academic dishonesty. Such a peer culture was formed by educating the students about the value of academic dishonesty.
I am deeply honored and humbled to be among the brilliant and best students who are being considered for the NHS. I have been looking forward to this opportunity since I was accepted at Brophy. I know that National Honor Society does great things in our world today. I was a part of National Junior Honor Society at Saint Theresa Catholic School and that that has had a huge impact on the person I am today. I believe that I exemplify the four pillars of National Honors Society, those being character, scholarship, leadership, and service.
So, after an agonizing twenty minutes of receiving compliments by strangers about completing the pretest after five minutes and having the teacher call me to the front to demonstrate long division, while she went to have a conversation with the principal about what to do with me, they decided to put me in a class that had both fourth and fifth graders. Right now, I was
I am an Asian and I am not really good at math. My parents hired a math tutor to help me in school. When I first came to United States, I had to take a math assessment test for the community college that I was applying for. I was happy with the result that I got because it was not as bad as I was expecting it to be. However, my father’s friend asked me why I did not get a high score.
Depending on how desperate a teacher is for good test scores, inappropriate preparations can be made before testing, sometimes even to the point of cheating. While having standards and a uniform teaching model, high -stakes testing is generally detrimental to the education of America. The importance of these tests has become the be-all and end-all of high school. The accountability of the testing will follow the student throughout his or her educational life. Despite being held in such high regard, the high-stakes testing effects are far from the desired and predicted
However, my friend said something different. “She wanted to copy my answers, she was cheating. ” I was immediately send to the Dean’s office. At the Dean, the teacher came and gave us another test.
English 102 Reflection During the course of English 102, I took this year of the spring semester. I have accomplished a variety of goals I once thought were impossible. I have not only grown as a writer and a student but as an individual as well. I feel that through my experience of this English course, I have achieved knowledge and self-confidence to step out into the real world.
This was the first time my integrity was called into question, and the most crucial moment in my life. I understood the importance of this decision, and how it would affect my future. I also understood that alcohol is a drug, which in turn could result in addiction, and causing my grades to drop substantially. I wanted to resist, I truly did, however, to be utterly blunt, there were just too many girls. I don’t exactly recall what i did after that, except for the fact that I lost my shirt, and a piece of my integrity as well.
In my early high school years I was in my first Spanish class. The class was extremely difficult and many students struggled with the class including myself. As the end of the year came it was time for the final exam. On the first day of testing, the student aid of the class was able to take a picture of answer key scantron used for grading. This picture was sent to one person, who sent it to another, who sent it to the whole class and sure enough the next day for the final exam I personally knew that over half the class had the picture of the 100% scantron on their phones and used it for the exam to get an A. This act was immoral by everyone but the group as a whole all justified our actions by stating, “everyone’s doing, even the student
In turn, the act of indiscipline among tutors makes high school scholars start embracing deception as a regular activity. Although the primary aim of standardized tests is to gauge the level of intelligence and students’ preparedness for a college education, aided cheating makes learners develop bad morals which are likely to negatively impact on their future life. The future of high school students significantly relies on what they are taught by their teachers as well as what they see in the society (Bursztyn and Jensen 1342). By making cheating look normal, high school graduates are likely to continue with the vice in college and future
