He pays attention to small details such as the games Montezuma played with the Spanish, the shoes of his, the changes the caciques had in their clothes, to the market square and the amazing zoo this great city of Tenochtitlan. He even gives us an insight in the military weapons of natives: “In fact they cut like razors, and the Indians can shave their heads with them” . This is just an example of how good Diaz explains everything he saw. This type of explanation may seem as exaggeration, yet it is important to know smaller details about these people’s lives. By reading “Mexican Lives” by Judith Hellman we see how Neoliberal policies affected Mexicans from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. President Salinas goals went against the values of the Mexican revolution by liberalizing the economy of Mexico and selling state owned land to private capital which went against provision Article 27 in the constitution which places strict ownership of land in the hands of the Mexicans. When Hernando Cortes arrived in the New world he was greeted by a totally alien and unfamiliar culture. The Aztec people of Mesoamerica had similar infrastructure to Cortes’s native Spain, but the culture of the Aztecs was shocking to some of the Spanish who first encountered it. The Aztecs also had resources valuable to the Spanish. This difference in culture is what allowed the Spaniards to rationalize their decision to annihilate the Aztecs in order to gain access to their resources. The Spanish had just retaken the Iberian peninsula as part of the reconquista, and they had gained a strong sense of nationalism as part of that conquest (Gibbs).
In chapter four, Menchaca discussed how the Spanish during the late seventh century colonized Texas and Arizona to increase their power and control over the Southwest. The Spanish sent their military powers and church friars to set up forts and missions to control the large vast areas of land. Menchaca discussed the history of Texas 's founding and how it came into the possession of the Spanish. The Spanish wanted to settle in Texas because of possible threats of from the French invading their settled land. They set up missions as a way to protect their new conquered land.
In both of the written accounts by Hernan Cortes and Pedro de Cieza de Léon, a unique perceptive is given about the Aztec and Inca empires in the early 1500s. Both men describe the their seemingly first ever encounters with the indigenous people of the new world. Cortes recounts his interaction with Moctezuma and de Léon gives an impressive review of the Inca’s “well-organized” villages and provinces. Cortes’ account first tells about the sheer beauty of the Aztec empire with its streets that were, “very wide and beautiful and so straight that you can see from one end to the other. (Cortes)”
Up until the 1960s Anglo social scientists wrote most of the literature about the people of Mexican- descent in the United States. Their analysis of Mexican American culture and history reflected the hegemonic beliefs, values, and perceptions of their society. As outsiders, Anglo scholars were led by their own biases and viewed Mexicans as inferior, savage, unworthy and different. Because Mexican scholars had not yet begun to write about their own experiences, these stereotypes were legitimized and reproduced in the literature. However, during the mid- 1960s scholars such as Octavio Ignacio Romano, Nick Vaca, Francisco Armando Rios, and Ralph Ricatelli began to reevaluate the literature written by their predecessors.

This cultural group often refers to themselves as being “true Texans” while referring to those individuals who speak English as being outsiders.
I’m the first generation of my family to be Mexican -American, but I have been introduced to the Mexican culture since I was born. I appreciate the difficulties my parents have faced to make me the person that I am today even though I wasn’t born in Mexico my parents have taught me the language and the culture which I’m so proud of being part of. For others being Hispanic is actually being born in any Latin American countries which is not true at all. Being Hispanic is much more than my cultural background it actually describes how much I appreciate my culture and how I get to experience things other people don’t. I fit into the Hispanic community through the experiencing the culture first hand ,participating in traditions and planning to include my culture in my future.

Octavio Paz, a Mexican poet and essayist, is one of the many philosophers with a written piece regarding his understanding of Lo Mexicano. Paz’s “Sons of La Malinche” was first published in the Labyrinth of Solitude in 1950 and is a rather grim interpretation of the Mexican character, however, it captures the crisis of identity that Mexico was burdened with after the conquest.
