The concept of just vs. unjust and fair vs. unfair is a topic that has been debated for many centuries. This concept is very subjective, and it is nearly impossible to statistically prove that an action was either just or unjust. In my opinion, justice is a situational topic and varies depending on the instance. However, I believe that there is a set of guidelines that should be followed to ensure that justice is served. I believe that justice is going above and beyond to make sure that everyone is respected, and equality is assured. In the novel, Wine of Astonishment by Earl Lovelace, Bolo’s actions are unique, but still adhere to fulfilling justice. In particular, helping others achieve justice. Bolo loved his mother and would do anything for her. As a result, he was imprisoned for his actions of defending his mother and the church. “I don’t want you to arrest me. What I want from you is what my mother do . She is seventy years. What she do? She thief? Who she poison? And sudden so his voice burst out of him, What my mother do?” (Lovelace 69). During the police raid Bolo was very courageous in his ability to help others. Bolo physically assaulted the Prince, and as a result, the policemen brutally kicked, beat, and striked Bolo. This was a just action by Bolo, because it was what the situation called for; extreme situations call for extreme actions. Bolo is not the type of guy to sit back and allow the Baptist Church to be raided and allow his mother to be mistreated. This event was very inspiring. However, throughout the novel Bolo displayed the same emphasis on the community and truly helped others before himself.
