Exploring the Juvenile Justice System: Cyntoia Brown
Cyntoia Brown was sentenced to life in prison at the young age of only sixteen after fatally shooting Johnny Allen. She is currently imprisoned at the Tennessee Prison For Women. Georgina Mitchell, Cyntoia’s biological mother, drank while she was pregnant causing Cyntoia to become diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, affecting her behavior to be impulsive and rational decision making (Guy). At the age of two, Cyntoia was given up for adoption to Ellenette Brown after her mother started using crack cocaine. Towards the end of her documentary, “Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Story”, a recording of Brown’s voice is heard, “reflecting on her life and where she is today.” “Brown’s advocates told the Times that she has been a model inmate, earning a G.E.D. and an associate degree over her thirteen years behind bars. Brown, now 28, is also reportedly aiming for a bachelor of arts by next year” (Barron). Brown’s trial has proven to be very controversial as it sparked the attention of celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and Cara Delevingne. Rihanna first sparked the viral story of her life, her trial and how the justice system failed her. It then caught the attention of Kim Kardashian who reposted it on her social media responding to how unfair she was treated and that something should be done to help her which then got support and the same response from Cara Delevingne. Following all the shares from the celebrities, Twitter sparked up attention and support for Cyntoia showing through the hashtag “#FreeCyntoiaBrown” (Barron). Yes, she should have been punished for her actions but not in the way the justice system handled her case. Cyntoia was known to be a bright child who just got caught in with the wrong people and the wrong crowd. Brown was not a completely developed adult when she made the irrational decision, due to her fetal alcohol syndrome, to defend herself to Johnny Allen, unfortunately ending in a murder. Justin Gravely February 7, 2018 Practical Law Juvenile Justice Cyntoia Brown Cyntoia Brown was a minor who was convicted of murder and robbery at the age of sixteen years old now thirty years old she is facing a remaining thirty six years in prison before she is eligible for a parole hearing. In August 2004 she murdered and robbed John Mitchell a man that was soliciting her for sex. Cyntoia was in John's bedroom where she had noticed a gun cabinet earlier, Cyntoia claimed she was resisting Johns advancement when he then turned and reached beside the bed. Cyntoia then got her pistol from her purse and shot john in the back of the head. Cyntoia claimed she feared for her life and felt it was her only option.
Cyntoia Brown murderer or self defensive victim Cyntoia Brown was at the young age of 16 was bought for sex by Johnny Allen a real estate agent. Johnny Allen picked her up for sex and took her back to his house. When everything was said and done she pulled a gun from her purse and shot him. Cyntoia claimed she thought Allen was reaching for a gun and acted first when she told this to the police. Before she was caught she took Allens money and his truck and left.
“Baby killer” are the famous words used for the kidnapping and murder of Caylee Anthony. Cassie Anthony was only twenty-three years of age when she was tried for the murder and kidnapping of her own daughter Caylee Anthony. Caylee was about to turn three years old when she mysterious disappeared, then to later find her remains six months after the initial report of the missing child. Before we begin to argue this case, we should see that this case took place in Orlando, Florida, a mecca for children and family. The cause of death is still unknown due to the level of decomposition of Caylee Anthony.
Nicole Williams Ms. DeLong Juvenile Justice System Essay February 1st, 2018 Cyntoia Brown: Juvenile in Prison Cyntoia Brown was born in 1988 to her biological mother Georgina Mitchell. Her mother had given her up for adoption by the time she was two years old to a woman named Ellenette Brown.
She said, “She resisted his advances until he appeared to reach under the bed. She thought he was going to get a gun, or do something to harm her." She then said she took a gun out of her purse and shot Allan. The source then continues to go on, that during her trial, the prosecution argued that the motive for the killing was not self-defense, as Brown claimed, but rather robbery, since Brown took Allan's wallet after she shot him. She was tried as an adult and convicted of first degree murder, first degree felony murder and aggravated robbery.
Jordan Brown was 11 when he shot and killed his dad's fiancee in 2009. She was pregnant at the time, so Brown was charged with double homicide. The body was found by his dad's fiancee's four-year-old daughter. Brown has been detained, and the case is ongoing. Number Seven: Lionel Tate.

He said that he and a team of lawyers are still fighting for another trial, in which Bone believes Brown would be “charged with second-degree murder at the most.
Although, the picture the public failed to see at first ultimately led to a harsh and difficult lifestyle for these kids. The case of Cyntoia Brown is about an innocent victim, who had been punished for finding the courage to fight against the ones who had hurt her. Ultimately, this case is the greatest injustice act against a person ever yet. Her whole life, she had been facing abuse and inequity. She was only 16 when she has murdered Johnny Allen in 2004, and is now serving a life sentence, with an eligible parole on her 69th birthday. This powerful message was read aloud at a trial where Emily was attempting to get justice for his actions. At this trial, Brock Turner was sentenced to six months in jail on five sexual assault charges. An extensive jail sentence could have had a severe negative impact on the rest of his life.

During the fall of 1993, Shirley Crook’s, a loving mother and wife, life was horribly cut short in one of the most horrific ways possible, drowning. Seventeen year old, Christopher Simmons, wrapped his victim in duct tape and electrical cords and drowned her in a river with help from his accomplices John Tessmer and Christopher Benjamin. He attempted to burglarize the Crooks residence along with his accomplices, and he only murdered Mrs. Crooks because ‘the bitch seen my face’ (State v. Simmons). He “assured his friends that their status as juveniles would allow them to ‘get away with it.’... Brian Moomey, a 29-year-old convicted felon who allowed neighborhood teens to "hang out" at his home.
There are many children in the world who are being put behind bars and detained for alleged wrongdoing without protections they are entitled to. Throughout the world, children are charged and sentenced for actions that should not be considered as adult crimes. Here in the United States, the minimum age of criminal responsibility is age 12. Law enforcement officials and those in the juvenile justice system nationwide tend to mistreat underage individuals by trying cases while working through the lens of an adult. Unfair punishments are still handed down domestically, which is in violation of Supreme Court law.
