The use of Kangaroo Mother Care as an alternative to conventional hospital care for low birthweight infants
Introduction
Research on Kangaroo Mother Care as an alternative to conventional hospital care for low birthweight infants has shown to offer many benefits to the infant, the mother and the mother-infant relationship itself (Feucht et al.,2016). Although certain limitations exist as to the extent of the effectiveness of Kangaroo Mother Care as an alternative, the benefits outweigh the limitations which is why Kangaroo Mother Care is a better alternative for low birthweight infants. In this essay I will be summarising the research on Kangaroo Mother Care by firstly, defining the meaning of Kangaroo Mother Care and the potential risk factors

The initial separation in conventional hospital care creates Mother-infant separation which is detrimental to the mother-infant relationship as potential relationship problems can occur as well as physiological disorders (Karimi & Begheri,2016). KMC promotes parental attachment and research has shown that it stimulates maternal lactation which leads to an increase in oxytocin levels and an increase in the volume of breastmilk produced (Feldman,2004; Tollandini & Scalembra,2006). Consequently, maternal behaviours are encouraged which plays a part in reducing levels of stress and anxiety in the mother(Feldman,2004). Furthermore, the mother feels more positively towards the infant and research has shown that the mother feels more competent in stressful situations as a parent, has increased feelings of confidence, self-esteem and feelings of empowerment (Karimi & Begheri,2016; Tessier et al.,1998). Also, research has shown that mothers partaking in KMC are more likely to breastfeed which is more beneficial for the infant in the sense that breastmilk offers necessary proteins and elements that are essential for the infant’s growth (Furman,2017; Karimi & Begheri,201; White-Traut et al.,2012). Furthermore, feeding cues are picked up which allows for better interaction between the mother …show more content…
Furthermore, KMC facilitates in weight gain of the infant, facilitates in cognitive, neurodevelopment, socio-emotional and physiological growth and development and impacts the overall long-term growth and development of the positively. Additionally, KMC promotes mother-infant attachment and increases maternal lactation which has many positive effects on the mother such as reduced stress and anxiety and increased feelings of positivity. This filters into family cohesiveness which further impacts the infant positively in later life showing reduced aggression and deviant acts in young adulthood. Nonetheless, KMC has been thoroughly researched pertaining to stabilized infants with LBW so few evidence suggests that the effects of KMC will be as beneficial for destabilized infants. Furthermore, the capability of the mother in implementing KMC should also be further explored. Overall, the limitations of the effects of KMC do not suggest specifically negative effects of KMC, but implores that further exploration will provide clarity and a fuller picture of the benefits and effects of KMC. Therefore, the benefits of KMC outweigh the limitations and offer more positive benefits to both the infant and the mother suggesting increased development and growth in the infant and an overall sense of positivity of the
The secure babies used their mothers as a base to explore and as a protective safe haven. They were upset when the caregivers left but when they returned, they brought safety to the baby. Babies who had an avoidant attachment, didn’t want their caregiver upon return to the room. The caregivers for these babies may have been unresponsive to their signals of distress. Some babies were also classified as having resistant attachments, and tried kicking or arching their backs when comforted by the caregiver.
The objective of this Dissemination Plan is to identify and organize the activities to be performed in order to promote breastfeeding in the NICU to the key stakeholder and the greater community. Strategy for disseminating the results to the
Study was focus on vulnerable mothers (young, less educated, and/or unmarried), and the results show that early and adequate use of care improved for both racial groups, and racial disparities in prenatal care use have been markedly reduced, except for some young mothers. Kangaroo Article Writing In all of the texts the authors chose certain words to get their point across about the topics. In First Kill, the author used graphic words, similarly in Kangaroo a few Graphic words were used. However they were also paired with pictures of cute kangaroos and facts and statistics. In Government Announces 2,000 Kangaroos to be culled in canberra (Government), the author talked about the benefits of commercially killing certain amounts of kangaroos because of overpopulation.
Canada is known for its amazing healthcare and it is considered one of the best in the world. In Canada, healthcare is ‘universal’ to its citizens under the Heath Care Act. However, not everyone has equal access to healthcare, Aboriginals being some of them. Aboriginals have trouble getting the access they need because of socio-economic status, geography, lack of infrastructure and staff, language or cultural barriers an more. Aboriginals on reserve face many barriers when it comes to access to healthcare, they include cost, language, distance, climate, education and more.
This test observed patterns in the infants’ experiences of separation and reunion with their mother, and their reaction to a stranger, in order to evaluate the type of attachment relationship the infant shared with their mother (Ainsworth, 1978). Ainsworth found a significant consistency between the mothers’ interactive styles and the reactions of the infants. The results of this test led Ainsworth to classify the behaviours into three main categories. She identified the infants to have secure attachment, or one of two forms of insecure attachment, avoidant or ambivalent (Music,
Even with this improvements there are, there are still “sadness about the infants who did not survive, even among families who had barely enough to ‘keep the wolf from the door’” ( Judith Lumley). This sadness of losing a child during labour has had a great impact to my great grandmother. My great grandmother known as Maria lost her first infant in labour and also her hope on the medical field. Maria was a privileged women that was able to pay hospital care.
The babies were visited monthly and the carers were also observed and interviewed. A diary was also kept by the primary care giver (usually the mother) three measure were recorded. The first was stranger anxiety – the response to the arrival of a stranger, the second was separation anxiety – the distress levels when separated from the career and the degree of comfort upon their return and finally social referencing – the degree that the child looks at the carer to check how they should respond to something new (this is referred to as secure base). They discovered that a baby’s attachment follows in this sequence. • 0-6 weeks – Asocial –
Thus, suggesting that caregiver relationships are crucial to children’s psychological and physical survival. As infants are unable to verbalize their thoughts, crying is used as a means of communication and interaction between the infant and caregiver. Caring for an Infant
A human baby is born with poorly developed sight and is unable to move. As a consequence to this he is vulnerable and is completely dependent on a carer for survival (Winston, 2003). To improve the chances of survival, the baby is born with pre-programmed and automatic behaviour which are prompted by environmental factors (Bergen, 2008). Bowlby theorised that when a young child feels distressed, frightened or confused, attachment behaviour is triggered and this serves to bring the child closer to their mother* who provides the desired comfort, care and protection (Bowlby,
Thanks to case studies infant massage offers benefits such as sleep aid, congestion relief, body awareness, and intimate parent bonding. Just as there are numerous benefits for infants, the same goes for the parents. These benefits include stress relief, learning to understand cues from your infant, and increased self-esteem when it comes to being a parent. Infant massages are continuing to be practiced in homes, clinics, and the NICU in hospitals. However, there are many parents still unaware of this practice and all it entails.
In addition, some infants are classified as disorganized/disoriented with regard to attachment as they are not able to settle in to a single, organized attachment pattern when in distress. Instead, they become disoriented or resort to conflicting behavioral strategies. Attachments are not characteristic of either the caregivers or infants. It is the relationship bonds overtime between emotion and behaviors as infant and caregiver interact, particularly when infant needs for comfort are of concern. Sense of trust develops when a baby’s needs are responded to.
Through factors such as cognitive development of the infant, attentive care and intimate interactions with a primary caregiver, the attachment relationship is created – shaping the infants- caregiver bond. By examining the interactions between an infant and their primary caregiver, we can identify secure, insecure and disorganized attachment (Ainsworth, 1978; Cassidy 1994); which can reveal a great deal about the relationship between the infant and attachment figure. Overall, the quality of attachment bonds formed in the early years can have long lasting effects on an infant’s emotional security and social competence; not only shaping their ability to form relationships, but laying the foundations for the social, emotional and mental development of the
This critical incident involved a first time mother who gave birth at pre temp- 35weeks. Baby stayed in hospital for two weeks before being discharged home. After about two days of being home, mother called her health visitor, the student‘s practice teacher to inform her that baby was having breathing difficulties. Health visitor advised Lilly take the baby to A&E straight away which she did. Baby stayed in hospital for a further 7days before being discharged.
The arrival of a new baby, especially the first always marks a new beginning for a mother. It comes with a lot of challenges more so if the mother is less knowledgeable about baby care. Take such as cleaning the baby for the first time, or feeding, it is not easy. The baby is still fragile and slippery and needs a special care. But if the mother is not ready for all these, or maybe, does not have any knowledge on what to do, the baby’s life might be endangered since the baby needs a special care which only the mother can give.
