Have you ever wondered, what drives a person to kill innocent people? Every Criminologist asks themselves the same question, along with people who are either related to victims of serial killings, or simply hear about them on the news. I think it is safe to say that the people who might ask that question the most are parents of serial killers, who had never expected their own children to carry out such violent and inhumane acts. In 2001, Marc Vincent Sappington officially became labeled as a serial killer at the age of twenty-one years old. The main reason for his spontaneous killings was not due to his upbringing like most serial killers, but instead was caused by his involvement with drugs. Now known as the “Kansas City Vampire”, Marc Sappington was born on February 9, 1978 in Wyandotte County, Kansas. He is an only child, and was raised solely by his mother after his father left before he was even born. He grew up in a poor neighborhood, where poverty and crime slowly took over. For these

It did not take long for police to connect all four of the crimes together based on witnesses descriptions. The “Kansas City Vampire” confessed and was arrested and convicted in 2004 of killing four people. In one interview with the homicide detective, Sappington asked more than once if he could, “chomp on the cop’s leg” (McGraw, 2001, p. 3). The detectives and investigators believed that he was a strange case due to how young he was, with no history of sociopathic behavior. Usually serial killers sexualize their victims, but in this case the crimes were not motivated by sex. Also, detectives thought it was a strange case because serial killers are usually white men, and in this case Sappington is black. They also noted that it is uncommon for cannibalism to even be
This specific murder helped connect leads and motives to unmask the killer. In September of 1935, “Two teenagers wandering through Kingsbury Run came across the body of a man stripped nude save for a pair of socks. Washed clean and drained of blood, the man’s wrists showed signs of rope burn. Both his head and genitalia had been removed. Lucky for police, the victim could be identified via fingerprints as Edward Andrassy—a drifter who had prior arrests”(Casale).

The dead in their stillness would become the primary objects of Jeffery Dahmer’s sexual desires which led him to his necrophilia ways (Serial Killers). Jeffery Dahmer, born May 21 1960 in Milwaukee Wisconsin was a typical, healthy child who enjoyed teddy bears and toy blocks. At five years old he was fascinated with the sound of animal bones rubbing together, “his father swept out the remains of some small animals from under the house.
Jeffrey Dahmer was not borne a killer, but was made one through circumstance. Jeffrey Dahmer was born in West Allis, WI. (WH, 2011) His life was fine until he turned 6 and
The film “Murder by Number” also includes medical issues, including brain damage, as contributing to the violence of many serial killers. Some criminologists and psychiatrists believe that serial killers kill because of issues with their families. These issues include failure to properly bond with

The key factors that lead to his violent lifestyle were having an abusive, alcoholic father, being forced to believe all women were prostitutes (meaning sex was bad unless it was to have children), and being isolated from everything starting at a young age. From a young age, he developed a close bond with his mother. However, his bond soon became an obsession.
Most people are not aware of the qualifications to be a serial killer. A serial killer is defined as murdering more than three over a period of than more than a thirty day period, with a quick period between each murder where they stop killing, and whose motivation for murdering is primarily based on psychological gratification. William “The Lipstick Killer” Heirens, also known as number C06103 to his fellow inmates, is a peculiar serial killer who had a tough time growing up in Illinois. “Richard Cottingham is a serial rapist and killer that used the streets of New York and New Jersey as his hunting ground in the 1970s. Known for being particularly cruel, Cottingham earned the nickname "The Torso Killer" because he would sometimes mutilate the body of his victims, leaving just their torso intact. Born in Bronx, New York on November 25, 1946, Cottingham grew up in a normal middle-class home. When he was 12, his parents moved the family to River Vale, New Jersey (Montaldo, C., March 04, 2017).” He seemed to be the run of the mill kid.
John Wayne Gacy, Aileen Wuornos, Richard Ramirez and are all widely known notorious serial killers who in common, share the feeling of abandonment, neglect, and abuse during their adolescence years. Studies often show a traumatic experience can lead to mishap in one’s psychological and physical behavior which can cause anxiety, alcohol and drug use, low self-esteem, withdrawn, dissociation, difficulty with making and maintaining relationships, experiences flashbacks, hypervigilant, self-harm, and criminal activity. Since these killers had to endure a troublesome childhood, they were destined to become criminal masterminds. John Wayne Gacy was a U.S. serial killer who was found guilty of killing thirty-three boys and young men. He had an abusive childhood and struggled with his sexuality.
At age six, Dahmer and his family relocated to Bath Township, Ohio where he would later commit heinous crimes and would go unnoticed for quite some time. Many of the behaviors Jeffrey Dahmer displayed were firmly rooted and shaped in childhood. Jeffrey's mother was pregnant with her second child, which received considerably more attention than Jeffrey did. Young Jeffrey was fascinated with death and mutilation, even went as far as picking up roadkill mutilating them to see how all the parts work together. Dahmer was sexually molested by a neighborhood boy in rural Bath Township.
From 1978 to 1991 Jeffrey Dahmer raped, killed, and performed dismemberment and necrophilia on the dead bodies of seventeen men. It all originated from a messed up early life in high school where he developed a serious drinking problem. His first murder happened in 1978 when he was eighteen years old. His first victim’s name was Steven Hicks, who he killed while his father was away on a business trip. He had the house to himself so he found Hicks hitchhiking for a ride, when he offered him to come back to Dahmer’s place.
In Dave Cullen 's book Columbine we are given a new perspective on the columbine high school shooting, and the events prior. We are shown Eric and Dylan’s personal lives outside of being the “Cruel” and “Heartless” people that they are. They are people that we have created and refuse to accept so it’s their fault for what they become. Have we as a society willingly created this?
What drives a serial killer to their breaking point? What is it that makes them start killing? Nature and nurture are both key elements. They both play their part in turning a once innocent person, into a psychopath. Which drives a serial killer more though?
The MacDonald Triad is an important piece of information that can possibly identify deviant behavior in juveniles that lead to serial killings in the future. The triad includes three ominous parts to it including; fire setting, enuresis, and cruelty to animals. A key element to the triad is large number of serial killers have admitted to experiencing and committing at least one aspect of the triad. Neglect and child abuse have all been concurrent with serial killers that have characteristics relating to the triad.
The theory used in this journal pertains to the race, age, and gender of a serial killer; how they kill, the race, age, and gender of the victim; and how the killer lived before and during the killings. Before beginning his own study, Pakhomou (2004) found that “Serial (sexual killers are believed to be mostly white males in their twenties and thirties (at the time of the crimes) with above-average intelligence who commit intra-racial (within the same racial group) murders of strangers” (p. 220). Approximately half of them never had consensual sex with another adult, some joining the military, about half did not finish high school, and they had a history of burglary and sexual offenses prior to murders. There is no set reason or evidence that explains why people commit sexual homicide; however, there are many theories. One set factor that all researchers agree on is that “the most monstrous and most perverse sexual acts are usually committed by persons of sound mind, who are functionally rigid (in terms of a number of activities that they carry on), obsessed with fantasy and who have a determination to do what they want” (Pakhomou, 2004, p. 221).
The Profile of the BTK Killer Dennis Lynn Rader has struggled with this bloodthirsty, lustful monster that has plagued his psyche—ultimately damaging both himself and the society as a whole. Wichita, Kansas policemen had a difficult time identifying the culprit of ten convicted murders, condoned in broad daylight all within the vicinity, from 1974-1991. Rader, who refers to himself as BTK, was able to strangle and suffocate neighboring victims under the radar for nearly thirty years. BTK killed in a similar fashion consecutively; his method followed his “bind, torture, kill” perversions and fantasies. Most of BTK’s victims were females of all ages, but males were only attacked if they were concurrently in the same household as the woman
