She endured treacherous names and torture from her classmates. Even though she was called horrible names and even harassed she, still chose to go to school.

Although this is a very serious sin, Hester’s reputation is redeemable. One of the ways she can achieve redemption is by serving the punishment of being stared at by “. . . a thousand relenting eyes. . .” (Hawthorne 54) on the scaffold in the town square. By serving the socially accepted punishment, Hester is able to start redeeming her reputation in the eyes of society.

She writes that she screamed for her mother when her hair was being cut and how she began crying when she messed up the routines of eating at a meal, showing that she felt alienated and alone since she did not fit in with the other schoolmates. 3R Journal - James Castle In Chapter 22 of “the Catcher in the Rye”, Phoebe, Holden’s younger sister, continues to be extremely upset at his expulsion from Pencey Prep. She asks him why he has been kicked out of yet another school, and Holden apparently had “a million reasons”. Mostly, it was because everyone there was phony, and it was just a terrible place. Phoebe opposes saying that he does not like anything that happens, and challenges him to name one thing he actually likes.
