For Marx, the structure of capitalism causes alienation between the labor and human nature (Ritzier 2011). Marx uses alienation to show the horrible effects of capitalism has on humans and society, which cause individuals to become alienated from the task at hand and themselves (Ritzier 2011). For instance, a labor who worked at in steel mill in Chicago reported that he would alienate himself from the task in order to stay sane (Lefevre 1974). In addition, flight attendants were alienated from themselves because they were told to follow a script for their job (Hochchild 1998).
