The Good and the Bad There are two different types of sound. The first being good sounds; the gleeful giggle of a child, the melody of a songbird, even the quiet scurrying of a mouse. However, not every sound is good; the mournful wail of a newly motherless child, the chilling caw of a vulture, even the quiet, painful shriek of a mouse snatched by the large talons of an owl. Noises aren’t necessarily auditory either. The song “Noise” by Kenny Chesney tries to show these two types of noise, mainly focusing on the latter of these two. Specifically, Chesney argues that the noises that surround us affect us negatively, and that noise isn’t always auditory. The backbone of Chesney’s argument is laid out in the lyrics of “Noise”. Chesney mainly uses imagery to support his thesis. Seeing as how imagery in a video is the brother to diction in writing, I’ll clarify. More negative imagery is used when “noise” is first sung. Sexual and violent imagery is flashed in quick clips. Child beauty pageants, violent riots, money, prostitutes, and more snippets are shown. Besides their content, the clips are abrupt and contain many clashing neon colors. However when the final chorus is sung, the imagery changes dramatically. A field of wheat, a beautiful sunset, and soothing ocean waves are shown. Besides their content, the clips are slower and contain a variety of warm, pastel colors gently mixed together. The difference between the two types of imagery furthers the difference between good and bad sounds. The imagery also suggests that noise isn’t only auditory but also visual. The sexual and violent imagery being the bad, and the calm and natural imagery being the good. “Noise” by Kenny Chesney argues that we are surrounded noises that affect us negatively, and that noise isn’t always auditory. Chesney supports his argument through several different rhetorical strategies and in several layers. Parallel structure and repetition in the lyrics convey his thoughts towards bad sounds, tone in the audio convey his thoughts between good and bad noises, and imagery is used in the video to suggest that noise isn’t only auditory, but also
A wise man named Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” In other words, the color of a person’s skin should not be judged on how we treat each other. The color of a person’s skin should not be a bother in public. However, there has been many histories where the blacks were treated unnormal because of their skin color. Brent Staples strongly proved something mystical about the world on how many people react to black people in public spaces.
Sound is very important in this film because of lot of sound is edited to fit in certain spots including music. During the activist movement, we can clearly hear the hurt in these people voices. Riots, shouting and clapping were all heard in most of the shots along with a voice in the background explaining exactly what is going on. Music was edited into some of the scenes to help give more of a scary or haunted approach. There was also sounds that were in scenes which sounded like someone or something huge is about to take place.
Napoleon Dynamite, directed by Jared Hess, is an unique comedy following the life of a teen named Napoleon. Essentially, the film’s plot is following Napoleon, his family, and their odd adventures. The film shows Napoleon’s high school journey and his new friendships with Pedro and Deb. In the film, Napoleon and Deb work together to help Pedro run for the school president. Additionally, it follows Uncle Rico’s small businesses and Kip’s online love life.
It makes the overall work more dark and robust.” Avery said that the variety and doctoring of the sounds made her feel disassociated from her surroundings and engaged in the new occurrences within the video. There is not one specific fear or theme to focus on, but rather a
Music can bring the brightest of joys that keeps us moving through our dull and boring lives. An example of this joy is Ishmael Beah’s life as a boy soldier in his book A Long Way Gone. As he tells you his story, he tells of his dance group with his friends, the times he heard music in the middle of war, and how music saved him from the madness that brewed within him. Music has the unique ability to create peace in a person’s life despite the difficulties surrounding them, and to bring a constant reminder of who they are as a person.
Sound is being used to create or sense the mood for the audience. For example, when Kim’s father is outside, diegetic sound is used so the characters hear the baseball game playing in the background which makes the situation exciting for the audience. Edward finishes trimming a bush (the dinosaur) and everyone is amazed. This can appear to create a dramatic and happy effect for the audience. The sound then crescendos to make it seem as if Edward is being cheered on by the crowd.
All in all, the vivid description and brilliance of the auditory metaphor is what makes this quote the best aural imagery in the
What I can hear are occasional coyotes and constant chorus of “Baby the Rain Must Fall” from the jukebox. (Didion 108)” In this reference, Didion is making a figurative connection between the difference in sounds and morality. The ability of not being able to hear the elders sing a prayer may refer to a lack of conformity to the social code. Thus, she references, that she can only hear “Baby the Rain Must Fall”, which was a rock and roll song, that seems to symbolize unconformity, and independence from the social code.
Literary Elements used in The Lottery By definition the word lottery means a process or thing whose success or outcome is measured by chance (“lottery”). To most people winning the lottery would conjure up excitement and overall good feelings. However, in the short story The Lottery written by Shirley Jackson, the lottery has a twisted and horrific meaning.
The lack of complex editing and the use of the same type of shots rather than an assembly of multiple different shots of the same thing relaxes the audience instead of putting them on the edge of their seats like Pyscho would. The audience that the film Singin’ in
To begin with, if today’s generation met such a horrific disease that we could not brace for, human civilizations will both physically turn from modern to prehistoric and psychologically decade eventually leading to death and extinction. Thus, “speech sounds” stresses the idea that no matter how developed the human species become, diseases such as the one in speech sounds will bring human developments from its peak all the way to nonexistent. As an example, losing literacy has transformed Rye from such an educated person to not even having a reason to live. However, after reading Butler’s after words, I have a different perspective. I could very well relate to Butler since I had almost the exact same experience this past summer.
“There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in” (Greene, 1904-1991). Music is essential to every person’s life and seems to be involved in every activity of a child’s life from the moment they wake until they go to bed. Recent studies have shown that music (listening and playing instruments) have many impacts on children, especially in early stages of development of the child’s “body, brain, and their emotion foundations that support us for the rest of our lives” (Borgese, n.d.). There are also many other factors that affect child development like type/genre of music both violent and nonviolent that may contribute or hinder the future child’s behavior. Different music can have different effects on people, people don’t absorb the effect of music the same way.
Introduction Roger’s and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music is arguably one of the most well known films that many can admit to watching at least once in their lifetime. People all around the world have found this musical inspiring, as it documents growth and hope amidst the horrors of World War II. This incredibly well written film is based on the story of the Von Trapp family who escaped Austria when the Nazis invaded it during the war. Part of what made this movie so interesting on so many different accounts was the music that accompanied the vivid and exciting scenes. Without music, many could agree that our world would be a sad, quiet, dull and depressing place.
Considering the state of mind, one is in, what the person is thinking, and the type of noise being selectively chosen. May noise level be loud, melancholy, but not endangered? Everyone has developed noise verses silence within themselves. Specifically speaking directly on the topic of silent noise.
Every voice is a gift to the human world, whether you use it to speak, sing or whisper. It can be used to inspire others, or to coax a person into submission. If used wisely, it soothes the deepest wound and yet it is the most powerful means to instill fear into human hearts. Our voice is our power. So be it a radio jockey on your favourite radio station, or the voice that you turn to when you hit the road, there is a sense of elation that spangles your heart with joy.
