One of the beautiful and a commendable feature of the Khasi people is the way they have preserved the traditional and old forests since the ancient time. One of such anciently preserved forests in the Khasi Hills is Mawphlang Sacred Forest. It provides an amazing scene of the various life forms.

Mawsmai Cave

This cave is present in the village of Mawsmai. Located in heavily forested area this cave has large chambers and passages which are fun to explore. At some places inside the cave, you can see the water falling down along its walls and the water appears to be milky which contrasts with the dark colored rocks to give it a unique look.

However, it has a bone chilling tale of a Khasi woman who jumps off the edge after eating a meal which her husband prepared, who was supposedly her infant daughter. It’s said that on silent, dark nights, one can still hear the screams of the Khasi women. Apart from that, it being the fifth largest waterfall in India, makes it one of the must visit places. The tragic tale just adds to the mystery that shrouds it.
