Kids Are Just Children

Why should teen felons get to spend their jail time in juvenile detention centers for committing the same crimes as adults? In today’s world, teens are increasingly committing violent crimes and being put in juvenile detention centers. Teens need to be tried as adults because it helps to bring justice to families of victims, and it also teaches the teens accountability. Charging teens as adults will also help reduce crime in the United States. Although many people feel that teens should not be given severe punishments because they are immature and innocent, they have not considered the problem teens are creating by committing these crimes..

If an adult or elderly must use a diaper because of a condition that they have then it does not consider them a child therefore, a child that commits a violent crime does not consider them an adult. When children realize the violent crimes that have been committed by them it makes the adolescent feel guilty and horrid for what has been done. In some cases, the adolescents are curious and sometimes do not know what wrong has been committed. There should be a punishment for the violent act, but having the child tried as an adult is not the solution; that is why juvenile facilities exist around the world. Children that are tried as an adult and receive a guilty sentence will put the adolescent at risk, the child will not have a punishment limit, and the hopes of the child will be corrupted.

I agree that abolishing the mandatory part but not abolishing the whole Juvenile Life Without Parole sentence because I believed that there are cases when a juveniles should get Juvenile Life Without Parole while there are juveniles who should not deserve it. Some deserve it because they non-repentance killers or to be serial killers while other should not deserve it because of the circumstances required them. Juveniles who killed people without any mercy should be treated as an adult and be given Juvenile Life Without Parole(JLWOP). For example, the murderer of Jennifer Jenkins’ pregnant sister and her husband. Jennifer describes, “[Jenkins’s Sister] begged for the life of her unborn child as [the killer] shot her.

Juveniles Justice Juveniles who are criminals being sentenced to life without parole can be shocking to some people. I believe if a juvenile is able to commit a crime, then they are able to do the time. The article “Startling finds on Teenage Brains” talks about how the brain can be different from the time you are teens to the time you are an adult. After, considering both sides on juvenile justice it is clear that juveniles should face life without parole because they did the crime so they can do the time. Also I believe the juvenile’s age should not influence the sentence and the punishment give.

Many adults believe that these juveniles are just sweet innocent adolescents, and their sentences should not be as harsh as an adult. Juveniles like Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier are examples of minors that were tried as an adult. These two individuals voluntarily stabbed their friend an agonizing 19 times. Luckily the victim survived the attacks but now has to live with the horrors of the attack on a daily basis. Had Morgan and Anissa been sentenced in juvenile courts, the victim wouldn't get the justice deserved, and the attackers wouldn't be held fully liable for their actions.

Some may think that kids wouldn’t be able to do a crime as bad as a grown person. On the news, internet, or social media, people see what horrible crimes some people commit, but most of those accused have one thing in common: age over 18. Some of the crimes committed are murder, rape, and others. Furthermore, there are times where juveniles, people who commit crimes under the age of 18, being tried as adults. The offenses that trigger the juveniles to be tried as an adult are generally, again, murder and rape.

A child doesn’t have the same standards as an adult has. A good example is children don’t get to join the military as an adult could they must be 18 years and older to join the military. Teenagers don’t make the same decisions as an adult would. “With appropriate treatment most children who commit crimes, even the most violent crimes, can be rehabilitated and become responsible adults. ”(Berger)

“juvenile offenders cannot with reliability be classified among the worst offenders”: they are less mature, more vulnerable to peer pressure, cannot escape from dangerous environments, and their characters are still in formation (Juveniles Don’t Deserve Life Sentences). I understand why juveniles are less mature and not as aware as adults, but they should know the difference between right and wrong. If a juvenile is of the age 10 and up, than they should have the mindset to know what the right and wrong thing to do is. When a juvenile engages in an atrocious crime they should know why they did. Juveniles that commit heinous crimes, such as murder, should be sentenced to life in prison because their mind is developed enough to where they are conscious of what they are performing.

Juvenile Offenders Are Not Innocent Children A teenager kills his parents, another even younger boy kills his teacher by bringing a gun to school and fatally shooting him. Do these juveniles deserve a second chance? The simplest answer is, no. There are juvenile offenders that have rehabilitated and maybe do deserve parole.

Keep in mind, these are just the crimes that got them convicted. It’s hard to believe that if we want zero tolerance, all non-violent offenders should serve time in prison, as well as complete community services. All drug offenders should be held accountable for the crimes committed. Secondly, it sets a harmfully negative example for kids when the drug offender get off easy and are not punished.

Some people believe that minors shouldn’t get life in prison because they are “just kids”, others believe that minors should get life in prison if needed to. I highly believe and agree with those who believe minors should get life in prison,because if they had the courage to commit a big serious crime then they should also have the courage to accept the consequences given to them. If you really think about it,if one doesn’t give them a serious consequences due to their action they’re going to think that it’s okay,that the court system will take it easy on them because just because they are “just children”, which it shouldn’t be like that. Imagine being a parent with a thirteen year old son being charged as an adult with a life sentence without parole. Knowing that they will have no chance for rehabilitation. In some cases a lot of these individuals we are so quick to call adults once they take a life are, repenting for their sins towards the crimes they committed. When a teen commits a crime to this stance without a second thought or even with the thought in mind they are still not capable to understand the situation. To comprehend the fact that you took another life doesn’t really come to light till your mind is at a point where you see it as what it is death.

Greg Ousley Greg Ousley at age 14 was convicted of the murder of his two parents Bonnie and Jobie on Feb. 23, 1993.On June 26, 2012, the supreme court was to make a decision on his whether he should be released, and it was decided that he will stay in prison. Greg has spent 24 years in prison thinking about what he has done and there should be a decision to be made in March 2019 having to do with his case. In my opinion, Greg should be released and paroled in 2019, Although he has a life sentence I think it is best that he connects with the real world out of prison. At the age of 14, Greg Ousley's brain had not been developed to fully understand the consequences of his actions. Before he murdered his parents there had been signs that he was struggling but there was no acknowledgment towards him, therefore, he is not fully at fault.

A plethora of children in the United States is being tried as an adult consequently, 3000 children nationwide are sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Children under the age of eighteen should not be tried as an adult in the interest of the physical and mental well-being of the child. Many questions should be asked by the court before considering trying a child as an adult. What was the nature and nurture of the accused child? Was the child being abused?
