Macbeth by William Shakespeare and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins are two texts written ¬centuries apart but with very similar concepts of power. Both of these characters are heads of totalitarian societies and used force to control anyone who opposed them. Macbeth and President Snow lead with absolute power which lead to both leaders became paranoid, scared that there power would be removed from them.
Dictatorship is when a certain person or a small group control everybody in the country. (Encyclopedia Britannica) Dictatorship makes it so the leader controls what the people do. This also includes Communist Dictatorships like the Soviet Union. Our colony is strongly against dictatorship because there is always someone that has too much power when everybody else has no freedom to question it whatsoever. In Earth’s past whenever they had dictators they usually threatened the world. For example, Adolf Hitler was a dictator.(Encyclopedia Britannica) He then tried to conquer more land which ended up causing World War 2. He was responsible for so many unnecessary deaths that it cannot be allowed to happen again. Also Kim Jong Un was a dictator.
Friedrich Nietzsche presents several ideas on the concept of power and what humans do with it in his work “On the Doctrine of the Feeling of Power.” Such ideas can also be found interspersed into the personalities of characters in Nancy Farmer’s book The House of the Scorpion. We conceive power as a person’s ability to have others do what he wants, and Nietzsche highlights this points in various parts of his text. Having power is not bad, but people do not always use theirs for good. Finally, aspects of Nietzsche’s ideas run through each person’s individual everyday life. Power is an important part of the world and how it runs, but those who possess it do not always see it this way.
In the world we have dictators that have so much power that rules simply don 't apply to them and they act inhumanely. One such dictator, Kim Jong Un has absolute power over his people and therefore he doesn 't follow the rules of his country. When we don 't follow rules we act inhumanely and commit actions as Kim Jong Un has, which are killing his own people for his own interest, kidnapping and torturing thousands. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies tells the story of a plane crash in a deserted island that was only carrying boys except for the pilot that died, resulting in the boys having to survive by their own in an island where there will be shifts and struggles of power between them. This leads to division between the boys and they shift
The 1970s were a rough year for African-Americans, still fighting for social and political rights in the United States. Consequently, women still did not receive equal rights. However, in 1972, “Congress approved the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution, which reads: ‘Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex’ (History.com Staff).” Out of the thirty-eight necessary states only twenty-two ratified it right away, it was relieving for the moment because the feminist advocates had been trying to be ratified since 1923. The First African-American woman elected into Congress was Shirley Chisholm. This moment opened doors for African-American women that they thought would never have a chance. Nevertheless, the poem Ego Tripping written by Nikki Giovanni dated back to 1972 where she expresses her power throughout the poem with the support of feminist statements. Giovanni reminds the audience of historical moments that lead up to the current conditions of the United States. Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why) was published with a bundle of poetry which is entitled My House, the book of poems had a common underlying idea that Giovanni is free to do what she pleases and live by her own set of rules (Masterpieces of American Literature Ed. Steven G. Kellman.)
The Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines power as possession of control, authority, or influence over others. Having the ability or capacity to change the future has been around longer than we can admit to imagine. Power comes in different shapes and forms , anything or anyone can have it. Even just having things can show and have power like how the Firefighters in Fahrenheit 451 carried these intimidating flamethrowers with immense heat. The people feared these firefighters and manipulated them into thinking books were evil because books had knowledge and creativity which held an even greater power.
The given source is a political cartoon addressing the issues in North Korea about their recent threats of nuclear war by use of analogies. The cartoon depicts the totalitarian leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un. In the picture Kim Jong Un is depicted with his hair cut extending into a black mushroom cloud and the words “Some bad days are worse than others” written next to him. Through the entirety of his control over north Korea, Kim Jong un has become a laughable figure to the rest of the world. Due to his unrealistic views and his peculiar looks, most specifically his iconic hair cut he is constantly viewed as a joke. The cartoonist takes advantage of this in the image by making fun of his hairstyle, referring to it as a “bad hair day.”
Power in today’s can be used in many different forms such as to show strength, rank, encouraging others, being an influence, being a leader, and much more. The way you use power in a situation can have a positive or negative impact on an individual, community, country, nation, or even the world. In the short story “Miss Temptation” by Kurt Vonnegut, he describe how power can impact an individual way of thinking of others due to past experiences. Power can anything one allows to have a dominance over their lives. It is the ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Unfortunately, power has the ability to change ones perspective or belief in something. It is for one to decide if they want to overcome power
Power can be too much for some people to handle. History has shown us many individuals who become too powerful and begin to make decisions that have a lasting negative effect. This taste of power is something people crave and too often once they get their first taste, they are never satisfied. Gail Giles shows us in her book Shattering Glass that power can change anybody for better or worse. So as Rob’s power begins to disappear and he begins to spiral down a dark road, Giles illustrates the theme that power can suddenly develop an uncontrollable momentum of its own.
Change, hope, and justice, are all things North Korean defectors, including Human Rights activist Hyeonseo Lee, wish for in the harshly governed country of North Korea. Many people know about the story of Hyeonseo’s escape from the unethical dictatorship of the Kims. But she was so much more. As a Human Rights activist fighting for a change of the corrupt and cruel system of government in North Korea, she is trying her best to inform people of how terrible and a dire situation it is in North Korea. Through this, she is showing her defiance publicly towards North Korea, when just a little over a decade before, she was expressing absolute loyalty and respect towards the Kims.
North Korea is a dictatorship country and is ruled by Kim Jong-un. The country is considered one of the world’s most secretive societies and is also one of the few countries that is still under a communist rule. North Korea is currently testing out their nuclear weapons and making it
Power is often found in security; the most powerful nations today know this statement could not be more correct. As of today, nine countries currently obtain nuclear weapons including the United States, The United Kingdom, Russia, China, and North Korea (Ross, 2016). While countries like the US and the United
The urban environment is the locus of various forms of violence. The city is a meeting point for peoples from diverse cultural, racial and religious backgrounds, a place where they struggle for scarce economic resources as well as political power. The heterogeneity of the urban environment makes it an attractive place for thieves, rapists, assassins, murderers, etc., who can commit crimes with little fear of recognition.
What is it to be good or evil? Truthful versus deceitful? In Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is given a prophecy by three witches that he shall be King and Banquo, his noble friend, shall be the father of kings. Macbeth didn 't like the idea of sharing power and wanted it all to himself. He contemplates killing King Duncan but is forced to commit to it by his wife, Lady Macbeth. Macbeth 's confidence diminishes and when he begins to meet his true fate. A powerful theme shown in Macbeth is that anyone can be susceptible to being both good and evil; this is shown through the snowballing effects of Macbeth 's potential idea of evil, to his guilt of murdering Duncan and Banquo, and his and Lady Macbeth 's eventual downfall due to committing worse deeds for power.
Probably the only country in the world that totally rejects globalization, North Korea, upon becoming a separate country in 1948 when the Korean peninsula was divided into two separate countries in the aftermath of WWII, has emerged today as the world’s most enduring isolated totalitarian socialist society in recent history, according to Freedom House.
