Known for its rolling hills and beautiful beaches, Kitty Hawk is a very frequently visited city with over 40,000 visitors each year. Although it is a good vacation spot, a very important advance in technology that changed our world forever happened. Kitty Hawk NC marks the place where brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, invented and enhanced the first airplane. While the Wright brothers were growing up, they were inseparable and very inventive. They started to become peeked by interesting mechanical devices. They even invented another practical device; the bicycle. Once they embarked on the task of building a plane, they already had basic knowledge of mechanics. With many ideas already filling their heads, they moved to Kitty Hawk in 1900 because of its sand dunes. They wanted something to soften a crash in case they were to crash. Their first device was unable to fly as a kite, so they flew it as a free-glider. In 1901, they moved back to Dayton and came up with many other ideas. One of them was to add power to their new machine. The Wright brothers soon found out that they had to build their own engine because no manufacturer would make one that met their specifications. Although some go for the beautiful beaches, most are there to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial. It is 60 ft. tall and has ground markings that show landing and launching points. The memorial has a full-scale model of both the 1902 and 1903 flying machines as well as the 1903 engine block. Visitors can also see replicas of where the Wright brothers lived. There are several items similar to the one the Wright brothers brought with them. Another attraction is Centennial of Flight museum. Here visitors can see many exhibits donated by NASA. People come to see the root of aviation and to participate in fun activities included paper airplane “flying tests” and kite building
