Roles and purpose of organizations American Nurses Association (ANA) ANA also known as the American Nurses Association is consider to be one of the loudest voices for Registered Nurses today. ANA has been around since before 1911. ANA represents all Registered Nurses today and makes sure that there is an adequate amount of nurses that are highly skilled and well educated. They not only make sure that the healthcare system is getting the most up to date and accurate skilled nurses, they are a true advocate for nurses in the work place as well as the general public. This has been a fascinating project to explore and I am learning about so many cultural beliefs. For example, in some cultures many people believe that illness and evil can be prevented by following strict religious codes, morals and practices.

The hospital based diploma program has largely gone out of favor; there remains less than 75 diploma programs in the United States (National League for Nursing, 2013). More nurses favor entering the profession via the Associates degree route (38% of the workforce) while nursing administrators want more BSN prepared nurses. Why would administrators want BSN prepared nurses when they come with a higher cost in wages? Why did the IOM recommend increasing the percentage of Baccalaureate prepared nurses in hospitals to 80% (Institute of Medicine, 2010)?

In creating this portfolio, I am inclined to maintain a professional e- handbook, so to speak, of my educational and professional accomplishments over the years that reflect growth and development in my quest to be a competent nurse. Creating an e-portfolio allows for the safe documentation and archiving of my information that potential employers can have easy access to when I am in the process of seeking employment opportunities.
