Eric Wright Miss Royse English 4 8 April 2015 Tuesday Night Fight: Koufax vs. Johnson Two pitchers so great at what they do that tens of thousands would flock just to watch their artistic play. Although, Koufax was more of an art while Johnson’s was more of brutish force. They could never be compared on the field due to them playing 20 years apart. However, I will use statistics and sport analysts to show how Sandy really was the superior baseball pitcher. Johnson may have been compared to Sandy when he played well, but he never really matched Koufax’s play on the field. I will give three points of how and why Koufax is better than Johnson. First of all is Sandy’s career awards. Koufax won 3 Cy young awards in his 11 year career (Sandy). He didn’t really dominate until his final 6 years (ESPN). The reason he is better than Randy is because he had to earn the awards in an era of baseball that compared both American league and National league teams to decide the winner whereas Randy only played against the pitchers in his League (Cy). Sandy also had to compete against twice as many pitchers than Johnson. Some pitchers that really challenged Koufax were also in the …show more content…
Koufax was an incredibly fast throwing pitcher. Players in his time would comment on the velocity and unpredictability of his pitching. He was very fond of his curveball. It had a sharp turn with a speed of 83 mph and it would often make a batter swing to late (ESPN). Sandy was able to make a fast pitch but it was his delayed release and the balls movement that made him really good. Randy on the other hand was a brute force pitcher. He would send a fastball 105 mph down the center of the plate (Randy). It worked most of the time seeing as how he is one of the all-time strikeout leaders, but when it didn’t work it was costly. Johnson may have been a good strikeout pitcher, but he did not have the outstanding variety Koufax did to be able to cause groundouts or fly
Have you ever wondered about the greatness of many teams? Have you ever understood the struggle and adversity the Oakland Athletics have faced or the fame and fortune of the Los Angeles Dodgers? Both of these teams have great histories and have some definite differences. The start and the position has helped one team and hurt the other. Both teams can be compared together and contrasted apart.

Whatever can be said for or against the general ability possessed by Jackson as a ballplayer, it must be admitted that he is one of the greatest natural hitters the game has ever had. He possesses a free swing of the bat, the full swing the fans like to see. With the Naps, the equivalent to five full seasons, the South Carolina Shoeless Wonder framed a battering average of .372 and the batting stunts pulled off by this rangy Southern lad will live long in the memories of the fans of old Cleveland. With the Chicago White Sox since the latter part of 1915, Jackson has been a factor in that team becoming a contender for the honors and finally landing a pennant.
Greatest starting pitcher of all time Some of the most dominating starting pitchers of all time consists of Cy Young, Randy Johnson, Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Sandy Koufax, Andy Petite, Roger Clemens, and Walter Johnson just to name a few. Although these names are some of the best of all time there is just one that stands out from the rest because he was a freak of nature and that is the fireballing right hander Nolan Ryan. Nolan Ryan is arguably the hardest thrower of all time in the past 30-40 years and is one of the best workhorse pitchers of all time besides the all time shutout leader, Walter Johnson. Nolan Ryan’s 27 season career started in 1966 with the New York Mets and ended in 1993 with the Texas Rangers.
Dizzy Dean, the top dog of the St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff during the 1930’s attracted baseball fans from all over the country. His overpowering fastball dominated the game. Dean was a feared pitcher in the National League, achieving four consecutive strikeout titles and he had four seasons where he had 20 or more wins. In his 17 years in the major leagues, he pitched a total of 1,967 innings and struck out 1,163 batters.
In Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy, Jane Leavy does her best to bring to light the incredible Sandy Koufax. Koufax was one of baseball’s greatest pitchers, and could be considered the best. He is also one of the sport’s biggest mysteries. He doesn't do interviews with people that are trying to write biographies about him. But Leavy was able to gain access to hundreds of interviews with friends, teammates, family members, and acquaintances of Koufax.
Also his batting record is phenomenal! According to Baseball-reference.com he has had 477 RBI’s in his entire MLB career (7 years). He also has had 450 runs in his entire MLB career. He was faster than your average freight train, and could cover an area as big as you need, but that isn’t quite what makes him unique. He has played a number of clubs, (Indianapolis ABC’s, Lincoln Stars, Chicago American Giants, Detroit Stars, St. Louis Giants, Homestead Grays, Harrisburg Giants, and Hilldale Club to be exact) and every one of them have said a positive thing about him. How many players do you know that can pitch whenever you need them to, but also start at an outfield position. This all started when Oscar decided to become the Indianapolis ABC’s batboy when he was 15. He enlisted to the army that same year and was stationed in the Philippines in the 24th Negro Infantry.
Mickey Mantel and His Life in Baseball Cash Smith Why did I choose Mickey Mantel? The reason I have chosen Mickey Mantle is that he is one of the best baseball players to ever play the sport. I also love baseball and learning about baseball. Mickey Mantel had very many impacts on the game. Mickey Mantle hit many home runs and changed the sport of baseball.
Greg Maddux, was he the best pitcher of his generation? Greg Maddux off the baseball diamond may look like a high school history teacher to some, but it was his work on the mound that earned him the nickname the professor. While Greg Maddux may not exactly fit what some say the best pitcher in baseball is supposed to look like it’s his statistics that say for the better part of his career he was. We’ve all been outmatched at some point in our lives; for some it was mentally, and for others it was physically. Greg Maddux is no exception to this because unlike Randy Johnson who was 6 foot 10 inches tall and left handed or Roger Clemens who was 6 foot 4 inches tall and weighed around 250 pounds Greg was physically outmatched everyday when he showed up to the ballpark.
Satchel Paige is was a good pitcher that started out his professional career in the Negro Leagues. He didn’t have a good start to life as he was living in poverty. Other than that, black people at that time were being discriminated, which made life harder for people all black people at that time. He worked for white people for he helped his parents with the family needs. But with all that discrimination, he still managed to fulfill his life.
Everybody likes the pitcher, and he's the one who controls the game. The Yankees had a very unique pitching staff, there main pitcher was Mario Riviera and he was a closer. The closer is when there's a special pitcher to come out to pitch at the very last inning and pitch to win the baseball game. in the 1990 world series Mario Rivera had gotten injured and could not pitch in the world series. But there's one reason they still managed to win was because they had faith.
To the real world Ken Griffey had it all. But behind the scenes, he faced turmoil and he fought against it and became one of the best baseball players the game has ever seen. Griffey JR was born in Pennsylvania, but moved when he was young to Cincinnati because that’s who his dad played for the Reds. That is where Griffey grew up and began loving baseball. Griffey out of high school was the most talented player in that years draft.
