Symbolism of LOTF Items “A leader is the one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” (John C. Maxwell). Throughout the world, humans fight for control over society and differences of opinions. Different types of leaders which have different views of laws and freedoms. WIlliam Golding uses these concepts to show how a single island of boys represents the world. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses the symbolism of the conch shell to show order, the signal fire to illustrate hope for civilization, and the beast it represents the fear of the unknown. Freedom is amazing, but too much can have consequences, such as Chaos and things getting out of control. This is why we need rules in our modern day society, so that we are able to maintain order; wich means we will have a safe world that’s trustworthy and stable. The signal fire is used to symbolize hope for returning back to civilization. The fire is there only chance of being rescued, and returning back to their regular civil lives. “The fires is the most important thing. Without the fire we can not be rescued. I'd like to put on war-paint and be a savage. Bute we must keep the fire burning”(Golding). The fire is there desire of being rescued, that is why they must not let the fire go out. The island boys hope of being rescued is constantly dwindling, and this is why most boys turn to savagery. The savagery caused them to let the fire dissipate; consequently they lose their hope of a rescue and return to civilization. In the novel, the beast is a symbol for humans fear of the unknown.
