Modern dance is a free, explorative, and expression dance genre. Many of the movement explorations in modern dance are based on bodily concepts. These concepts were further developed through Laban Movement Analysis and Bartinieff Movement Fundamentals. Laban created a system for working with movement that facilitates an individuals’ access to, understanding, and expansion of their movement possibilities. Bartinieff Movement Fundamentals were created on the basis one’s movement coordination is affected by body connections and the relationship of initiation. In reference to weight, daily movement habits are affected. Basic body actions such as, weight shift, locomotor movement, and stillness can all be impacted by weight. For instance, while texting I tend to hold my head down, which places a lot of strain and weight on my neck. I will hold my phone up in a high level rather than low. Another experiential goal would involve reducing weight on my thumbs. I would be applying less
This was in line with the societal idea of “playing” and finding ways to experiment with norms or popular beliefs. To prevent conforming to the pre-established rules of dance, Tharp tested the limitations and experimented with a range of new possibilities such as combining genres and creating pieces with diverse sets of
Messages can be conveyed in many ways including through movement. A dancer knows how to use their facial expressions, combined with the dynamics of their body, to get their message across. A choreographer knows how to structure a dance to communicate a message through body in motion. Alvin Ailey choreographed his dancers and used this form of communication to create many powerful dances.
In America, Martha Graham (The Queen of Modern), Rudolph von Laban ( Time Energy and Space), and Alvin Ailey (Gospel or Lyrical Spiritual dance) developed and are developing for human movement and methods of instruction that led to the development of modern and expressionist dance. Dance is my interest of topic that I have a good understanding of, like the types of dances, the benefits of dance and what it can do. Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism” relates to my interest in dance because I know the structures of dance, I know how hard it is at first but with a little bit of effort everything gets better, I know what dance requires. I have more knowledge about dance than maybe any other subject.
If someone told me that I would be a dance major and study at The College at Brockport during my sophomore year of high school, I probably would have thought them to be crazy. Dancing was never meant to be in the picture and it was something that I stumble upon towards my final weeks as a sophomore. I had a choice to between tennis or taking a dance class to fulfill my P.E. requirements. I eventually chose dance and it create a new path for me. Unfortunately, I decided that I want to go into communication during my freshman year at El Paso Community College.
Second, she argues that movement needs more attention "as a primary, not a secondary, social text, one of immense importance and tremendous challenge" (49). She argued that because we tend to only rely on texts, art, sometimes music to learn about a culture. To dance is to be knowledgeable about the stories of the ancestral heroes. Dancing, unlike painting and singing, is learnt at an early age. This allows large groups of people to demonstrate their clan rights in front of an audience. Dance is also seen as an occasion to entertain and to be entertained and through the work of dance to show their love for families and kin. The words mentioned earlier: patience, determination, demands, facts, hope, disappointment, and faith each played a role in the creation of the dance. First, creating a dance was the artistic choice because dance is a physical artistic method to
“Artworks have ‘aboutness’ and demand interpretation” (Barrett 71). This statement creates a foundation for writing, specifically about dance, as each dance piece is always about something, no matter how simple it appears to be. As I began to write about dance I knew not only to provide a description of the piece, but utilize the description as evidence as I develop a possible meaning. Additionally he explains, “There can be different, competing, and contradictory interpretations of the same artwork” (Barrett 73). When I would begin to develop an explanation from the description I provided, I had to remind myself that my interpretation was only one view of the dance and I should not try to provide one comprehensive interpretation for the
Many forms of media have emerged over the decades. Some die while others stay and thrive. Over the past few, a sensational digitalized type of media has loomed into the modern world; it is called the new media. This phenomenon has drastically changed the public-from feeling more informed and ‘united’ with their peers to perceptions of fear and even ignorance inductions. Media commentator Sherry Turkle gives an example of the damages new media can cause through her book excerpt “Connectivity and its Discontents” and author Dallas Spires, who also gives an exemplar of this case through her essay “Will Text Messaging Destroy the English Language?”.
These elements were shown through body, energy, action, time and space. For instance, the dancers in the beginning were using their bodies to show that they were confident. The character’s head was up, chest out and back arched, as they moved to show their feelings. Likewise, the energy aspect of the dancing was shown through the explosiveness of the movements.
Whether it is politics or religion there are many issues that divide people into separate camps of beliefs with each side believing that they are in the right and the other group(s) are in the wrong and, even though it doesn’t affect the majority of the Earth’s population, dance has been one of these topics. Many people believed that dance is solely an art form meant for self-expression and the expression of social issues others have viewed it as sport that is good for your health due to the amount of physical exertion it requires. Within the past couple of decades, these ideas have begun to merge into a more solid truth of what dance really is, an athletic art form or as Albert Einstein famously said, “Dancers are the athletes of God”. The journey to this understanding of dance began many
