Why has Scotland fallen to the tyranny of Macbeth? In Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, there are many misdeeds committed to withhold control of Scotland by Macbeth. Macbeth gains a prophecy from witches which causes him to think about the need to be evil to take the crown. Throughout the play, he must hold control of his foul-captured crown from those loyal to the recent king. Who could have influenced Macbeth, a peaceful man, into slaying the king for power? The other only character that gained anything from the murder of the king was Macbeth’s wife, Lady Macbeth. This gain is the reason why Lady Macbeth is truly evil. Throughout the play, she commits many deeds that lead to this conclusion. By participating in these deeds, she is responsible for the downfall of Macbeth, who continued on a killing spree to continue to reign in Scotland. The…show more content…
She participates in many actions that suggest so. In the beginning of the play, she states, “Come, you spirits that server the thoughts of mortals: rid me of the natural tenderness of my sex and fill me from head to toe with direst cruelty!”(I, v, 39-42). So that she may commit the murder of Duncan, Lady Macbeth wishes to be rid of her tender side and replace it with cruelty. To murder Duncan, it will require her to be ruthless and that is what she is wishing from the spirits. In addition to wanting to be evil, Lady Macbeth continues to convey her true side. Later in the play, long after the murder of Duncan, Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking and beings speaking, “What, will these hands ne’er be clean? No more o’ that, my lord, no more o’ that!”(V, i, 38-39). Dwelling on the murder of Duncan, Lady Macbeth is still feeling emotions for what she has done.
