Introduction
Gardner and Lambert (1972) established a question “How is it that some people can learn a foreign language quickly and expertly while others, given the same opportunities to learn, are utter failures?” (p. 1). The toughness of learning another language can not be the main reason because some students develop their skills easily while others who have the same pedagogic program show little development (Gardner & Lambert, 1972). Teachers and students use the term ‘motivation’ to explain any success or failure in L2 learning; it is the main encouragement to initiate learning of L2 and directing force to continue the learning procedure (Dornyei & Csizer, 1998). Many factors are involved to learn a foreign language successfully but many researchers and instructors believe that motivation is one of those factors that affect the learning achievement. Therefore, discovering and explaining second language (L2) motivation is completely important. beside, an important place has given to the characteristics of motivated learners (Dornyei, Csizer, & Nemeth, 2006). Due to the great importance of L2 motivation, it has been the subject of considerable amount of attention (see Dornyei, 2005, 2001a,

Further, motivation is important during language learning because it is a learner's variable that affects language learning. (Dornyei, 2005) states that Motivation has a great influence on language learning. Students’ success in their language learning depends on their individual differences although they take the same lesson of language learning. Teachers should consider these variables which affect students’ success and the teacher should be aware of the learners' knowledge of learning and also learners' needs and provide enough motivation for learners to require language
Second Language Learning’s Motivation and World Englishes in James L. Brook’s Spanglish Released in 2004, Spanglish stole audience’ hearts for its heartwarming story about two distinct cultures: American and Spanish. It tells a story about a Hispanic woman named Flor who became a housekeeper in an American family. At first, Flor decided not to meddle with the Claskys by not learning or speaking English and worked using body language or known as compensatory strategies . However, after several events happened she finally decided to learn English in order to protect her daughter from being Westernized by Deborah, the wife of the family. Regarding to motivation theory in second language acquisition, Spanglish movie is interesting to be analyzed.
Motivation 3.0 Academic future In the book “Drive” by Daniel Pink he argues “carrots and sticks” don 't work, they may have worked before but fail in todays 21st century, he advocates businesses and companies should transition into motivation 3.0 autonomy, mastery and purpose because “carrots and sticks” can achieve the opposite of what they’re actually intended for. Motivation 3.0 can be fostered by “type I behavior” that is driven by internal rewards and is self-directed to becoming better at something. I am of two minds about Pinks claim of transitioning to motivation 3.0 on the one hand I agree that it would be more beneficial for companies and businesses on the other hand I am not sure it would work in every type of job considering that most common jobs in a small town like the one I live in are routine jobs, but I do believe that in the academic career it could bring success.
It takes a lot of time and dedication to learn a foreign language, which can cause the student stress and frustration. This is especially true when the student does not have any interest in the language. Not having motivation or interest can make it very difficult to learn. There are many students that do not see any point in learning a foreign language
Motivation at workplace There are two dimensions of motivation; internal and external. Internal motivation refers to personal interest in doing something and external motivation refers to be persuaded by someone’s activity. The characteristics of motives are identified as: individualistic, changing, may be unconscious, often inferred, and hierarchical (Reece, 2014). Most important fact to understand motivation is the theories. Many motivational theories have been developed over time to study human behavior at the workplace.
Context Motivation is regarded to be an important tool that can be utilized in accomplishing a given task. However, lack of motivation could result in inability to accomplish the task of poor performance. In this regard, it is worth noting that there are various factors that contribute to lack of motivation among individuals. Additionally, while an individual can be motivated at other times, some circumstances can make him or her to lack motivation. This reminds me of the time when we were doing group work that I realized that most of my group members were not motivated to do the assignment.
Grabbing the attention of any learner is very important especially when it comes to e-learning or any other learning types using ICT. Since, by nature, children are wiggly and fidgety and have difficulty sustaining attention for long periods of time, it is imperative to observe children in their natural environment in order to gain a better understanding of their typical behavior. There is a formula to estimate realistically how much time a child can focus on one activity which is “Attention span for learning = chronological age + 1”. As an example, an eight-year old child would have a (8 + 1 = 9) nine-minute attention span for a learning activity.
The students will develop pride in themselves and their heritage. Thus, the psychological and cognitive aspects involved in learning of two or more languages in an educational setting, the challenges of linguistic planning and the translation of information across languages is what we shall discuss elaborately in subsequent sections. I shall attempt to provide on the one hand an overview of L1 learning, and on the other hand some ways in which this relates to L2 learning in a
According to Florence Nightingale statistics is considered to be the most important science in the world as every other science from a social, political and educational perspective is dependent on it (Ridgeway, Nicholson & McCuster, 2007, p. 44). Statistical methods is a subject that organizes information and provides the necessary means for all other disciplines to deal with this particular information by taking the issue of variability into consideration. It therefore forms an essential part of most studies in the academic sphere (Coetzee & van der Merwe, 2010, p. 1). The objective of this methodological discipline is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to have an understanding of research to subsequently review
From what I’ve observed in a second grade classroom while doing my Service Learning, I’ve developed a set of goals and objectives for the improvement of motivation and affect for the students who are currently in class. To achieve these outcomes, there are different types of activities. Since there are different types of activities to achieve the expected outcomes, I’ve developed lesson plans to support the identified goals and objectives. First of all, motivation is how much the student aspires to learn. Affect is how the student feels while they are at school.
A serious social problem has emerged in the wake of alcohol consumption among college students. Individuals going away to college know they are taking on huge responsibilities to care for themselves, get to class, do their homework, and so forth. They also know they will not have the adult supervision that prevents them from consuming alcohol. In a three year span at Monmouth University there was a total of 504 alcohol violations, a number derived from the combination of arrests and campus disciplinary action records (www.monmouth.edu/mupd). This number is a gross misrepresentation of the prevalence of alcohol consumption in universities since many students get away with it.
Examine Motivation and the Adult Learner . The purpose of this paper is to describe how motivation relates to the characteristics of adult learners, discuss the implications this characteristic has on the design and delivery of online learning for the adult learner, and discuss how time management and the potential for procrastination may affect academic success. Motivation defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary is “the act or process of motivating; the condition of being motivated; a motivating force, stimulus, or influence.” Pew, (2007), finds motivation “as the level of effort an individual is willing to expend toward the achievement of a certain goal.”
Motivation is one of the internal essentials of life; in other words simply no one can live without motivation. Motivation helps all living organism in the process of achieving their goals or targets. For example all professional athletes target is to be the best at what they do; one factor that distinguishes between wanting something and actually reaching it is the stimulus that moves the living organisms to do a certain action in order to reach their target or goal, which also could be defined as motivation. The second example is about animals where motivation is also an important factor in their lives. The most probable targets of animals are related to their basic instincts and their basic needs; as a small example of that is food which
As we try to analyze the working behaviour of individuals we understand that in a working environment we deal with various personalities and needs. Each person may categorize money in a different position as far as his priorities are concerned in his personal hierarchy of needs. Therefore, we can assume that motive constitutes a complex equation between employers and employees. Motivation is a process that provides direction to a person in order to achieve a goal that covers his needs through creating and maintaining a goal guided behaviour (Mukherjee, 2009, p.148). Nevertheless, behaviour is not only influenced by incentives but also from variables such as individual skills, knowledge, feelings and beliefs (Werner and DeSimone, 2009, p.55).
The first few weeks are the most exciting since new employees do not know what their new employers are throwing out at them. They also tend to be most incisive in this time period because they’re new to the team. However, this enthusiasm does not last for new team members; most employers often don’t realize they hinder their new employee’s motivation. Consequently, by one’s nature it is expected to be excited about starting a new job. Nonetheless, most employees are not happy where they’re at after meeting the real company they work for.
Giving Praise to Encourage Students’ Motivation is Fundamental Introduction In recent decades, one of the problems faced by students is how to build up their motivation. Encouraging students’ motivation is essential to increase their performance and involvement in classroom activities. Academic performance, inappropriate behaviour and unproductive classrooms are all related to motivation issues. Motivation is needed to promote students’ interest and attitude in order to help them realize their potential and improve their desire to study hard.
