Kenya is a multilingual country which has had a clear language policy since it gained independence from British rule in 1963. English was the official language and was used for communication in offices, the judiciary, the legislature, for instruction in schools and for international communication. Kiswahili was the national language used in inter-ethnic ethnic communication to foster unity. Mother tongues were used for communication at home within the family members. With the promulgation of the new constitution in 2010, both English and Kiswahili became official languages. While barely a quarter of the Kenyan population can adequately use English, it remains the advantaged official language and the medium of instruction in the education system …show more content…
Metaphors are also created by a certain history: either the history of the context or the history of the individual. The history of contexts and individuals vary across time, and these variations in history produce variations in metaphors. The kinds of metaphors used also depend on the diverse concerns and interests that govern people 's lives. For example, crop farming, cattle keeping and pastoralist industry are largely the main concerns and interests of the people of Kenya. Kovecses (2005, p. 286) adds that people 's concerns and interests may be general, that is "built into" their culture, or personal lives. Both significantly influence the metaphors people employ to understand the world around them, and, as seen in this study, the way the different tribes view each other. Goatly (2007) observed that the inseparability of body, mind and world, on the one hand, and cognitive and cultural models, on the other hand, are emerging from body-world interaction, rather than arising purely from the heads of individual people. Consequently, Gibbs (1999, p. 156) agrees that metaphor is a kind of tool that arises from the body-world which we can ’re-experience ' in an embodied way, and is not simply accessed from long-term memory, in different ways in different real-world

There are many language examples within the novel, Kingdom Keepers: Disney after Dark by Ridley Pearson. Although some may think of metaphor as ornamental and inapplicable for use in subjects other than English literature, metaphors are necessary for communication in all fields. The use of metaphor is especially crucial in the field of education, where students cannot be taught without the use of metaphor because one cannot understand completely new ideas without making a connection to previously known information (Reddy). Textbooks readily employ metaphor in order to convey new information to students. Pages 28-29 of The Primate Family Tree by Ian Redmond illustrates the evolution of primates through a diagram of a tree and describes how the theory of evolution has changed since the nineteenth century. The Primate Family Tree willfully utilizes
The cultural metaphors can consider as a cultural system or use of language that shared within people with the same culture and values. Moreover, the use of a certain metaphor in a culture can be not understandable and doesn’t make sense for another culture due to the difference in values and beliefs. The metaphorical meanings in different cultures motivate and state

A metaphor is a forthright correlation between two dissimilar things. A metaphor is used to say one thing while meaning another to symbolize the true meaning. In the story “The Skating Party” Merna Summers uses the metaphor “I’m not going to be your window blind” (195), this is a good metaphor because window
Metaphors are an influential piece to the literary world due to, “the process of using symbols to know reality occurs”, stated by rhetoric Sonja Foss in Metaphoric Criticism. The significance of this, implies metaphors are “central to thought and to our knowledge and expectation of reality” (Foss 188). Although others may see metaphors as a difficult expression. Metaphors provide the ability to view a specific content and relate to connect with involvement, a physical connection to view the context with clarity. As so used in Alice Walker’s literary piece, In Search Of Our Mothers’ Gardens.
Metaphors are used heavily in literature to describe and attribute meaning towards otherwise hard to describe objects and situations, as well as make comparisons and create a certain image. Medical metaphors do the same to describe diseases in a way which the general public can understand, but they have an even deeper impact as well. A study conducted in 2010 found that physicians use metaphors in almost 66% of conversations that they have when describing serious illnesses to their patients, and that the use of these metaphors truly enhanced the physician's ability to communicate (Casarett, 2010). These metaphors are used in order to relate the patients new feelings about an illness to feelings they already understand. Common medical metaphors
Metaphors such as this one create connections and empathy between the audience and the speaker. Using a metaphor is the perfect way to evoke a reaction from the audience. The use of metaphors in Reynolds’ speech allows the audience to develop empathy toward the speaker and the speaker’s
The overall understanding of metaphors used in everyday language comes from learning with one another, just like Lipsitz’s idea of evolution in his book, “It’s All Wrong But It’s All Right”. Metaphors
The House on Mango Street Message Not many of us can say that we have lived up to the expectations given to us and internally benefited from it. In the book The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza struggles with growing up with many expectations placed on her. She lives in a Latino neighborhood in Chicago with many neighbors who teach her important lessons. Overall, the story has a message that you should not rely on expectations and the author shows it by using the characterization of Esperanza and through figurative language.
I mainly use metaphors to help someone better understand a concept. For example, one could say that another is a walking dictionary. This helps us to infer something about another person. We assume that she knows a lot of words and definitions. Right now, I mainly see a lot of repetition and metaphors in music.
From the invention of a new courage, to a dress defining inequality, to criticizing humans for the lack of understanding others perspective, Lee usage of metaphors dig deeper into the roots of human logic. Humans tend to have a habit of forgetting or dismissing the little things learnt. The more observation and more effort put into attempting to remember and applying throughout daily life, the larger the growth in overcoming our flaws. Of course, it’s near to impossible to fully overcome, but what’s life without the
