The concept of language teaching methodology has been an extremely controversial issue so far. Based on the ideas of many research scientists and professors of education and linguistics such as Larsen-Freeman (2000), there are various types of viewpoints and debates on choosing only one desirable language teaching method through which all language learning goals can be achieved. The outcome of these discussions is that there is no single method to be called the best and ideal method for language learners. She also mentioned that methodological choice should pay more attention to the process of learning. Knowledge of methods is fundamental knowledge of teaching and helps teachers to enrich their background knowledge of new teaching techniques …show more content…
There is no single method which is superior to others and it is not suitable to utilize the same methodology to all learners with different learning goals, background knowledge, learning needs and wants. Universities and educational systems can have a main impact on utilizing methods desirably. Teachers can reflect on their own way of utilizing methods in various situations in order to have the best outcome based on different learners' needs and …show more content…
He focused on the learner's experience and responsibility for learning. It can be meant that teachers should not merely try to impose learner autonomy but they have to expand the learner's role in the process of learning. The student motivation is of great importance which can be extrinsic and intrinsic. The extrinsic motivation comes from the outside of the classroom like applying for a particular job in which the learners need to learn a specific language for that and this is just related to the learners not teachers. On the other hand, the intrinsic motivation is the one which happens in the classroom and teachers can improve this one with their creative methods and activities in the
The tone of Paulo Friere’s essay is informative as well as condemning, he let us know of the current teaching method and a way to improve it while also criticizing the teaching system in which the teachers are “depositors” and the students are “depositories”. The tone of Anne Sullivan’s speech is that of a fellow classmate, a friend, it is familiar and compassionate, her speech makes us listen, it relates to us and it will help guide us, we will remember her words to use our education for the greater good. The structure of Anne Sullivan’s speech is short, straight to the point while still delivering her message, colloquial, and holds a coherence order. The structure of Paulo Friere’s essay is a long one in which he use various examples and different ways and ideas to address the problem, includes many points, formal, explains his ideas completely, supports his belief in a new teaching system and holds a coherence
In the first part of “Why We Hate Teachers”, he talks of his childhood and told stories of how school was for him. By doing this he gives the view of a child on school, and how the contradictions seem from a child’s point of view. He starts with how got sick as a child and was tricked into getting better. This is a representation of a child doesn’t want He speaks of his teacher, to him not being bad, but his parents refer to her as “stern”, for she punished children very hard. This results in another contradiction that teachers face.
Teaching strategies, the first component includes: multiple teaching strategies including academically-oriented feed-back, proper correction of student errors, fast-paced exposure of tasks, and providing opportunities to participate. Teacher training is the next component. It was discovered that the best way to teach the teachers is the exact way the program is designed to teach its students. Students are continuously tested to monitor progress and check which students are ready to move on to the next activity. Equally important is the amount of academically engaged time.
There are a rising number of students living in the United States that are classified as English Language Learners or ELLs. These students are not only learning grade-level content but also learning how to communicate in English. The majority (77.2 percent) come from Spanish speaking countries in Latin America. Latino ELL students are typically enrolled in schools that do not have experience serving this special population.
Next, he talks about who helped create the system we use today, and what the goals are for the schools in 6 functions. Finally, he talked about how the schools teach students to perform certain tasks in the future, how mandatory schooling made students not think about what
Teaching styles vary by age group and subject, but for elementary education, the best strategy options have been condensed into a select few. For example, when working with a younger age group, their attention spans are much shorter than that of an adult, therefore, teachers must adjust lesson plans to accommodate such things. For this reason, the best option is to teach with a variety of techniques and styles that take into account the need of students to be active and engaged (Ollington). For many young students, hearing, seeing, and moving during a lesson is the only way for them to completely comprehend a new idea (Tileston 20). Ordinarily, some options will work best with different groups than others, therefore successful teachers find
His entire speech builds upon and works to prove this idea. He knew his intended audience when writing this speech was not the people who could make direct change to the system, but that it might develop into one of the many catalysts needed to create long lasting change to how children are brought up through the educational complex. This is why the text comes off as an introductory course to a multifaceted issue. This is not a bad thing, it is necessary step if support is to be garnered from the intended audience. The goal of this speech was to spread awareness to the general public about the negative aspects of education today, and that goal was thoroughly achieved.
Self-determination theory (SDT) assumes that inherent in human nature is the propensity to be curious about one’s environment and interest in learning and developing one’s knowledge (Niemiec & Ryan, 2009). However, educators introduce external controls into learning climates, which can undermine the sense of relatedness between teachers and students, and stifle the natural, volitional processes involved in high-quality learning (Wroten, 2014). The theory identifies that students are intrinsically motivated to learn and that educators should capitalize on this desire when designing instructions. Further, SDT suggests that teachers can capitalize on internal motivation by supporting student curiosity and their desire for autonomy. If educators can find ways to support autonomous motivation in the delivery of instruction, then optimal learning can be achieved (Niemiec & Ryan, 2009).
Stations or centers might be teacher-led if new knowledge is to be given or student-led if mastery is to be obtained on the information given by the teacher. Project-based is another strategy and one of the best ways to differentiate instruction due to the students’ needs and styles are addressed. Projects internalize help and support among students beside some academic skills. Tiered Activities, on the other hand, are based on the learning tasks designed at different levels of complexity according to students’ readiness levels, i.e. to be gradually given to the students ,whenever the student finishes one stage, they transfer to the other one until the task is done, or at times keeping the learning outcomes same the learning tasks can be designed according to students’ learning preferences viz. Learning styles or Gardner’s multiple intelligences.
In fact, as per one of the predictions, by 2018, many universities and students will adopt this idea because of its diverse dimensions on teaching and learning theme. Truthfully, this technology and mode of learning indeed open doors for learners to gain better understanding on different
Those five ways include i) whole class teaching, ii) group work (teacher-led), iii) group work (student-led), iv) one-to-one (teacher and student) and v) one-to-one (student pairs). Whole class teaching seems to be the most important way in my class and I can be very sure in any other class since it is the main method uses to convey knowledge to students. Students get very comfortable and happy doing group work but there is a little case in which student is prefer to do individual work. No matter which way is selected, indirectly, students are actually developing their critical thinking. It is proved when students submit their work or project.
Learning a second language at a younger age is beneficial Most little kids first day of school is when they are approximately five years old, and about to enter kindergarten. Kids go to school from about age five till graduation from high school at about age eighteen. Most schools focus on the basic core subjects, such as math, reading, science and history. Until junior high or high school, foreign language is not even offered.
“You can’t see other people’s point of view when you have only one language,” declared psycholinguist, Frank Smith. Just as it is mentioned in this quote, foreign language is important; therefore, people should learn a foreign language at an early age. When learning a foreign language at an early age, it helps people to concentrate and increase comprehension skills. Also, at a young age, the mind is fresh, so the person can take in more information and can easily master a foreign language. In addition, most secondary schools, universities, and jobs require a foreign language to be known.
I believe as teachers of English language we first get our understanding of the English teaching methods and techniques that would later affect our decisions about teaching our own students long before than official academic training begins. In fact, I, as a non-native speaker of English language, have spent at least twelve years learning it, which also means twelve years observing my teachers’ methods and strategies. Therefore, I would first like to describe my experience as a learner of English, then proceed with describing my personal teaching experience and conclude with a reflection on how these influences shaped my beliefs about language and language learning. Traditionally, teacher in Russia is regarded as an authority figure, and learners tend to rely on them to a large extent, therefore approaches that Russian professors adopt are mostly
TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHODS TO TEACH WITHN THE CONTEXT OF HIGHER EDUCATION Teaching methods refers to the general principles, pedagogy and management strategies used to classroom instruction. The choice to teaching methods depends on what fits educational philosophy, classroom demographic, subject area and school mission statement. The teaching theories can be arrangement into four categories and based on two major parameters- a teacher centred approach versus and a student –centred approach, and high tech material use versus low-tech material use. TEACHER-CENTRED APPROACH TO LEARNING Taken to its most extreme interpretation, teachers are the main figure in a teacher-centred instruction model.
