Typically associated with violence, video games tend to have a bad reputation. That being said, it may come as a surprise that various studies confirm the idea that video games should be implemented as cognitive development tools due to their abilities to enhance processes of perception, memory, and learning. Many educated scholars have realized that the modern video game exhibits fundamental traits believed to improve learning and affect brain plasticity (Eichenbaum et al., 2014). Laparoscopic surgery is a procedure which relies on a surgeon's hand-eye coordination and visual attention, for which he receives training on by playing video games; allowing him the opportunity to improve hand-eye coordination ***. Also concerning perception, visual attention refers to an individual's ability to switch and divide their attention effectively. This is an important skill in our fast paced world. Action video games are then a great way for people to enhance their visual attention because the gamer is required to constantly switch and divide their attention. To prove this, a study was done by comparing video game players to non-video game players: testing their visual ability. The results showed that the video game players outperformed the non-video game players in being able to identify objects in cluttered scenes and were able to process visual information with greater efficiency***. A key component to a functioning memory is one's working memory: a system that lets us learn, synthesizing the information being taken in with the information we already know***. The best way to learn information in this way is to have a deep emotional connection to it, this way the information can be moved from the working memory, into the long term. The focus here is on that deep emotional connection because it allows video games come into play as they are proven to trigger emotional responses while being played; allowing the information to be effectively moved into long term memory***. Concerning short-term memory, ones executive control is a very important function we use daily. It is basically in charge of multi-tasking; It processes information in the short term, making sure you can manage everything at once. Researchers can measure executive control through a multitasking test where participants have to identify multiple things at once***. A study was executed where participants with no video game experience were gathered, some played a simple Tetris game while others played an action shooter game. The subjects who played the action shooter game showed significant improvements on the test after having played the game; while the ones who played Tetris saw no improvement at all***.
