On October 20, 2014, LaQuan Mcdonald was shot 16 times by law enforcement after being seen holding a knife. Although he was carrying a knife, video evidence showed that McDonald was in no way posing a threat to the responding officers. After the murder, the McDonald family revealed that LaQuan suffered from PTSD and complex mental health problems. However, there is no education for police officers on how to respond to people with disabilities or injuries. I am not justifying the murder of LaQuan McDonald, but I am trying to justify why defunding the police will only hurt our society more with the few requirements needed to become an officer. The movement should target what police stations spend their money on rather than taking away their funds …show more content…
This caused more crime to go unsolved which forced officers to work lengthy amounts of overtime (Weichselbaum and Lewis). Allowing this to continue will only cause more and more officers to quit because of the hard work they are putting in with very little pay to show. Working overtime is an extra role to take on if you need the money or have the time. Being forced to work should never be the case for any job, especially for the men and women that try their best to keep us and the people around us safe. Defunding the police and using that money for any other matter is and will always be the wrong choice. With the scarce amount of money left for the police if defunding did take place, the pay would have to go down along with the requirements necessary to become an officer as training would drain too much money. With the pay being so low, cops would not take the risks necessary to provide for the society they are entrusted to protect. With the requirements going down as well, low income families would be more willing to take the job just to provide for their own family. Being able to call yourself a police officer has slowly lost its value as more corrupt cops are shown than good. The media wants you to see everything from their perspective, not your own. To do so, they take the bad out of the good and the good out of the bad and manipulate the viewers with their tricks. This tactic has led to the downfall of law enforcement and will continue to do so unless someone or something puts an end to
In a viewpoint by Nicole Flatow titled “History Indicates Varied Results in Improving Police Brutality in America,” She believes that there has been little reforms regarding police brutality. Nicole argues for years, America has barely made any effort on improving the use of force by police officers. For example, victims such as Rodney King and Amadou Diallo, led to some reforms, but did not solve the violence of police brutality. With the beating of Rodney King that was captured on camera, it sparked massive outrage that led to a riot when the police officers received no charges. Because of the riots, it created a momentum for a reform of the police.
Whether that be with policy terms changing and you would have to conform to meet the new set of guidelines. Also speaking on the behalf that past and current events in not just York, but across the country would also change procedures on how some tasks are completed. He said that past events across the country and how they have been portrayed have played a huge part and put a big spot light on all forms of law enforcement work. It has also made an effect on how recruitment has changed in some areas being in positive ways but in others not so much. Officer Headlee became a police officer to be a public servant to help all who are in need, but believes that a lot of new recruits are starting to look at law enforcement as an undesirable career and coming into it was a mindset of what can this place do for me and not what can I do for this
When facing this issue, some people are to believe that cops have more important things to do, whether it be a larger, full-scale crime, or them just not caring. It is apparently believed that those working to fix issues regarding crime, have no taste for the smaller, “irrelevant” ones that face society frequently. Whereas the distrust in our safety system stems from is without reach of comprehension, but the fact of the matter still stands behind the fallacies. Cops, although given a bad reputation through movies and society, have a job to prevent and fix any crimes that come their way, large-scale or small-scale. The small misbehaviors that
In our small town of Russell, we take pride in those who are outstanding to the community and have helped better our lives. Sadly, those who have had faith put into them by their loved and trusted fellow people have lost trust and value to our town. With the lack of budget, it has become hard to keep law enforcement around since many leave and go to better paying jobs elsewhere. Don 't get me wrong, we have great police officers who do their job well but, with limited people their job is just a game of ring around the rosey.
I agree that officers have a stressful and demanding job. I think that the police needs to know how the community and the board sees them. Sometimes the truth hurts and in this case it may but they need to know. I think your idea on having officers at community events is a great idea. Showing that the officers care makes the community respect their authority more.
Murder, as defined by PC:187 of the California Penal Code, is the unlawful killing of a human being, or a fetus, with malice aforethought. On June 13th, 1994, a passerby found Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown dead outside of her condominium in Brentwood California. Immediately, police went to go question ex-husband Orenthal James (O.J.) Simpson. After a long winded and in-depth investigation in which all evidence pointed towards Mr.Simpson as the perpetrator, O.J was found not guilty for two cases of murder in the first degree. One of the most controversial aspects of the case, aside from the celebrity status of the lead suspect, is the large amount of evidence and how it was poorly and improperly handled.
In America, the issue of the defunding of the police is a serious issue that affects the police themselves and the people the defunding is supposed to help “The police are the first responders to a broad range of public safety issues and serious crime. Crime will not end if we abolish or defund the police. If the police are defunded, there will be delayed response when people who are in need call 911, fewer police on the street in neighborhoods and communities…If we defund the police, those most affected will be the poor and the marginalized”. The defunding of the police which is meant to help the poor and marginalized will hurt them more than anyone. All of the criminals that the police take in and the public service they do will all go away and that will hurt society greatly.
The Ferguson Police Department was harming not only the citizens it served but also law enforcement agencies everywhere. The norms associated with public safety must be focused on the prevention of crime and the health, safety, and welfare of the public. It is unknown for how long the Ferguson Police Department ingrained the deviant behavior into its officers but regardless, the damage was
This isn 't great on the grounds that with cops speculation like that it gives them to some degree a need to overstep the law. They essentially feel that with the end goal them should implement the law they need to break some. Cops hone this unwritten manage all over the place, particularly Los Angeles ' CRASH unit. Debasement was so basic in the CRASH unit that they had standard systems to cover it up if something turned out badly. In general, the LAPD didn 't have the solid bolster it required from the group.
In Law Enforcement and enforcing the law there is six areas in which police departments have been found to be defective or deficient. This is a very difficult topic for me to agree with because police officers are put in to very stressful and unknown circumstances on a daily bases. In many cases these scenarios require a decision to be made in a split second or it could be life or death. This split second decision has months and months to be twisted and picked apart by lawyers, jury, and mostly the media. Another reason police receive such attention is because it is their job to be in the view of the public at all times and today’s technology is making it even more difficult for them to effectively and efficiently do their jobs.
Qualified immunity as it is in the United States has allowed for no consequences for police officers even if they keep repeatedly making the same “mistake.” A longer training period and better screening will allow for a more trustworthy police system. Crime prevention is another good reform. Crime prevention does not just mean arrest, jail time, and fines. It means researching the cause and taking steps to stop the cause from happening.
They don't understand without these police officers it would be chaos without any order, but a result from this is technical advancements like the camera on the officer's chest that records video and audio helps solve little problems people claim. The types of vehicles they drive are way different. Troopers drive chargers or suv’s and most sheriffs drive older impalas, vans, or a suv’s most of the troopers have newer cars mainly because they are funded by the state that's another benefit I really like the retirement and benefits the state gives you are awesome for you and your
It doesn't necessarily mean that we should alter the amount of funding police departments are receiving in any way. It does, however, mean that we should proportionalize the funding more effectively among different aspects of our police force. In knowing that “the US is home to around half of the world's civilian-held firearms,” (Doc A.) we can infer where most funding seems to be administered. However, if the decision were to be made to limit funding, the problem we’d face would be inadequate policing programs. These policing programs, that would likely be cut off from any type of financial support, are acknowledged for “ the positive impact … and outreach [they] have in supporting safe, strong communities.”
Officer training and supervision are highlighted in a report created by a working group of mayors and police chiefs from the United States Conference of Mayors under improving police department procedures. This paper includes a set of ideas for bettering community policing. According to the paper, "training should encompass more than policing methods" (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2015). The paper emphasizes the significance of police personnel knowing their position in society and emphasizing community participation. "Training must focus on reducing unjustified use of force, and officers should be given alternatives to the use of deadly firearms" (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2015).
These officers should encourage the community to be more involved in the prevention of crime. This will also help all communities, not just the big cities, feel more confident and comfortable in the system that serves them. There is currently so much tension between the police and the
