On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza, 20-year-old resident of Newtown, Connecticut, shot and killed 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary. Before going to the elementary, Lanza shot and killed his mother in their home. Once police officers arrived at the school, Lanza shot himself in the head, dying immediately (Jordan 2014). This has been one of the most fatal school shootings in the United States, second only to the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, claiming 33 lives. The incident at Sandy Hook began at 9:35 a.m. and Lanza fired the final bullet to the back of his own head at 9:40 a.m according to the State’s Attorney Report (Sedensky 2013).
The Beltway Snipers were a series of coordinated shootings that took place over three weeks in October 2002 in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Ten people were killed and three other victims were critically injured in several locations throughout the Washington D.C., metropolitan area and along Interstate 95 in Virginia. The rampage was perpetrated by John Allen Muhammad (then aged 42) and Lee Boyd Malvo (then 17), driving a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan. Their crime spree began in February 2002 with murders and robberies in the states of Alabama, Arizona, Florida,Georgia, Louisiana,Texas, and Washington which resulted in seven deaths and seven injuries, bringing the ten-month shooting spree total to 17 deaths and 10 injuries.
After they spent a lot of time together, Hicks attempted to leave but instead, Jeffrey Dahmer hit Steven Hicks over the head with a ten pound dumbbell (crimemuseum.org) . “[He] admitted to killing him because he didn’t want him to leave. (crimemuseum.org).” To get rid of Steven Hicks’ remains, Dahmer dismembered him, put them in plastic bags and buried them behind his parents’ house. He also murdered 8 year old girl Karen Ann Hill who was found under a bridge. She has been raped and murdered. Police found mud,leaves and other debris had been forced down her throat and inside her clothing. Neighbors remembered that Shawcross was the last person to be with her and that is when it got suspicious. He received a 25 year jail sentence and later his wife Penny divorced him.
Less than a week after the Minnesota mall stabbings, a man in his 20s walked into a mall in Washington on September 23 and killed five people with a rifle. The man walked into the Cascade Mall in Burlington, which is 45 miles south of the border from Canada and began to shoot people around 7 p.m. The attack took place in a Macy’s department store at the cosmetic section where four women were killed in the attack and one man later died at a hospital due to his injuries. In the documentary, Living for 32, Colin Goddard discusses his experience during a shooting at Virginia Tech. In April of 2007, Seung-Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech murdered 33 people including himself and injured 23 more using a Glock 19 and a P22. This massacre was considered one of the deadliest shootings in U.S. history. The shootings occurred predominately in Norris hall, where Goddard was attending his French class. Goddard was shot four times in his hips and knees and only seven of his classmates survived out of class of 17.
Michael Brown was an 18 year old African-American young-man visiting his grandmother for the summer when he was repeatedly shot and eventually killed by Officer Darren Wilson. Witnesses claim that the officer initiated contact and, after a struggle in the street, Michael Brown tried to surrender by putting his hands up. This is when Officer Wilson fired multiple shots, one of which hit him in the head, killing him. This incident led to complete and utter chaos in Ferguson, Missouri, where Brown was killed. On the 27th of May in 1997, an 18-year-old, high school senior, Jeremy Joseph Strohmeyer, raped, beat, and strangled the seven-year-old, Sherrice Iverson to death in the Primm Valley Hotel Arcade.
