A lot of teenagers complain about how tired they are in the morning. It’s so hard getting out of bed in the morning, especially when you go to sleep late at night. In my opinion, I think that school should start later in the day. We learn way better when we are fully awake. We have the energy to stay awake during school.
Imagine getting used to waking up at 7:30 in the morning for school and ruining your future schedules all because your school decided to make school starting time later. Imagine in the future, you are late for every early meeting or late for work everyday and eventually getting fired. I say no to this. Schools should not bring back the starting time because of transportation, part-time jobs, and after school activities.
First of all, the start times of middle and high schools should be later for the protection of students’ academic scores. Students who don’t get enough sleep get lower academic and standardized test scores. If students were to get more sleep, they would have increased scores and a better quality of life, (according to www.npr.org).
A good number of adolescents are lacking sleep and are performing poorly both academically and physically. As a result, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is pushing educational policymakers to make middle and high schools start later in the morning (Richmond). Students show up to class seriously lacking sleep and the early start times cause them to have to wake up at hours that contradict their internal clocks, which are rhythms that determine sleep patterns. Less than half of the 10th graders get even seven hours of sleep, which is already less than the recommended hours of sleep for an adolescent (Richmond). Even if teenagers go to bed earlier, their school start times are becoming more early as they advance through grades
To begin with teenagers usually need 8.5 hours of sleep a day. Not enough sleep for students has gone to far. 22,000 kids all across the USA are stressed and tired for school. School should start later because starting school early is not just a student complaint, it's an observation backed up by science. Studies have shown the brain doesn't properly function until two hours after students leave there rooms in the morning. 70 percent of teens aren't getting enough sleep. Activities also can interfere with a students sleep.
One reason school should start later is that less than 20% of kids get the recommended hours of sleep-9.5 to 8.5 hours- and that causes problems in the classroom and teens who do not sleep enough are moody in the classroom. Also less teens get in car crashes and are at a big risk for drugs, alcohol, depression, even suicide. Teens get in crashes because they do not get enough sleep at night.
If school began an hour later this would let students get more sleep, as they would more than likely continue to go to bed at the same time they do currently. “Research shows that teenagers’ body clocks are set to a schedule that is different from that of younger children or adults. This prevents adolescents from dropping off until 11 p.m.,” (Kalish), with a different sleeping schedule caused by the hormone melatonin, which causes tiredness, it would be beneficial to start school an hour later. If most high school students don’t fall asleep until 11 p.m. and get up at 6:30 a.m., then most students will only get seven and a half hours of sleep, or less if they have to get up earlier because they live further away and have a longer commute. Studies show that after nine hours of sleep adolescents
21% of teen motor vehicle accidents are caused by drowsy driving. Many teens everyday are complaining about their school start times being way too early. Teen tiredness is now considered to be a public health pandemic. School starting at a later time is beneficial because it helps students catch up on sleep. It helps students stay out of trouble. And it helps students ability to learn.
I’m pretty sure most people hate getting up super early in the morning to get to school. Am I right? Well I think it’s the worst! In my opinion, I think school should start later because it is better for one’s health and it’s better for students’ concentration in class. One other reason why school should start later is because it is more convenient.
Have you ever felt like you are not taking in as much as you could from your first few classes well if you have you are right. Your brain is not actually taking in information until 8:30AM that is because you should not be waking up until 8:00 AM. The reason for this is your mental clock. A mental clock is how your brain decides when you should be sleeping and when you should be getting up in the morning. Starting school later can actually improve your learning, health and even your attitude and all of that can be changed by just starting school at 8:30AM.
Beep. Beep. “Uhh why do I have to go school, it’s so early in the morning.” This is a common phrase said by students that wake up early and have to go to school early. Should schools start later? This is an important issue because starting schools later has many positive effects. Some positive effects of starting school later is improvements in grades, test scores, and overall performance in core subjects. Another positive effect of starting schools later is that students will be more attentive, have a better memory, a better mood, and a better behavior and executive function. A third positive effect of starting school later is that it gives students the extra sleep they need to perform at the body’s peak ability in academics and physical
Many people argue whether school start times should stay the same or become later in the day. Most students already don't get enough sleep during the night and that can affect their learning experience in school (Wahlstrom). However some positive effects can still come from waking up early in the morning and getting to school around the same time. Although good can come from waking up early in the morning and sleeping in, students still need later school starting times to improve their overall health.
Most adolescents don’t get nearly the correct amount of sleep and the early school start times make it worse. Having school start later would have a great impact on teens’ overall health. Some people may say that teens should just go to sleep earlier, but its not that easy. Early school start times should be changed because they are dangerous, inconvenient, and it negatively affects body growth.
Coming to school later than we already do could help society in so many ways. You have the students that wake up, go to school for 10 hours, go to practice for 3 hours, then stay up doing homework and projects for 2 or more hours. You have teachers that teach, stay after school, go home, grade lessons, make more lessons for tomorrow, etc. With a schedule like that, lots of rest is extremely important. Going to school a little later could be the key to that extra rest. Even 1 hour of rest could be the difference between you falling asleep in classroom and not understanding the material to being attentive and understanding everything that is being taught. When the students are awake, they become smarter, and when they become smarter their test scores begin to rise. When the test scores begin to rise, our world education ranking improves, and that is just what we want to see. The issue for students who attend school at 7:30 in the morning, is they don’t hesitate or think twice about falling asleep. After school, sports, and homework, the average student need at
