Layap is the Iloco word for meteor. It is a popular belief in Ilocos Norte that when you happen to see a meteor, wish upon it and that aspiration will come true. I have witnessed several layap falling from the vast skies; I’ve done countless wishes and most of them I already forgot because it did not come true. The layap may impart a lesson of patience and the value of hard work when you really want to achieve something. This astral phenomenon projects the Ilocano value of diligence and optimism. The layap symbolizes hope, it may vanish fast from the sky but the hope still lingers. The layap represents the Ilocano optimism.

The baggak clearly owns the northern sky at the break of dawn. Its manifestation in the Ilocos sky is also translated into an artistic masterpiece. The baggak is a design element and an optic expression for the handwoven textiles of Ilocos Norte. The baggak is depicted as a geometrical quadrilateral image that is woven on the template of the textile. For the Ilocanos, the baggak is a symbol of renewal.
