Question 1
1a) Lead is a heavy metal that bring many health problem to us containing impaired kidney function as well as cognitive deficit, especially in children. Therefore, lead leakage is a big issue to us since it may profoundly and long-term affect our health. According to the ‘United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission’, exposure is identified as contact over time and space between a person and one or more biological, chemical or physical agents. Exposure assessment is measuring the exposures to be arisen or anticipated occurred in human population. Having exposure measurement, the following several factors should take in consideration.
1. Concentration of lead in the environment

Routes of exposure is the method that people come into contact with a hazardous chemical, the routes comprising breathing (inhalation), eating or drinking (ingestion) and contact with the skin (dermal contact). Lead can spread through these three routes. Lead exposure happens primarily by ingestion, the residents in Lynnview Ridge take the lead contaminated water and food. Moreover, breathing is second major pathway for human lead absorption, the lead particles suspended over the air and enter human body by inhalation. Furthermore, dermal contact also contributor to lead poisoning, they absorb lead by touching the contaminated stuff such as soil, wood and …show more content…
For example, compare the lead leakage effect on Lynnview Ridge and to China. It must be more influential that lead leakage occurs in China because the area of China is much larger than Lynnview Ridge. The area is resided throughout by people, larger area causes more residential people to be exposed to the contaminated area, more people contact with lead in their daily lives. Thus, the larger contaminated area will cause higher human exposure.
The above mentioned are the factors should be consider while assessing the human exposure to the hazardous substance. Lead gives rise to many health issues to human, so carefully use of lead must be implemented to prevent suffering from the disease of lead poisoning. Enterprises have the responsibility avoid the pollution created by their business and ensure the public health from poisoning of toxic chemicals. Everybody have a right to enjoy a clean and unpolluted environment!
1b) Lead is a heavy metal that exiting in nature, which is toxic to human body. Absorbing excessing lead causes lead poisoning, this disease influences many organs of human including kidney, bones, reproductive, circulatory as well as nervous
The Flint River was found to contain eight times more chloride than Detroit’s water which is highly corrosive to metals (Sanburn). This caused lead to leach into the water. Seniors, adults, pregnant women, and children are suffering from lead poisoning. Lead poisoning can cause many hazardous issues. Switching water supplies was a terribly bad decision.
Many parents and children had lead poisoning along with unexplained rashes and hair loss. Because
Most damages when exposed to teratogens occur during the embryonic period. Lead exposure during the embryonic period can cause stillbirths, increased risk for malformations, and VACTERL syndrome; VACTERL association is a disorder that affects
Reflective Journal entry Unit 4 In today’s society, one of the primary objectives is to ensure that staffs working in the various department of the health sector have maximum protection, inclusive of the environment in which they live dwell and play. Therefore, adequate measures must be implemented to extenuated environmental and occupational hazards. The occupational and environmental health takes a multidisciplinary approach as it relates to the correct identification of diseases from exposure hazardous agents in the community of in the workplace.
Recent studies have shown that the water in Flint, Michigan has been contaminated by a horrible health impact, lead. This has happened because nearly two years ago, the state of Michigan decided to save money by switching Flint’s water supply from Lake Huron, to the Flint River a notorious tributary that runs through town known to locals for its filth. This has led to many terrible effects shown in both children and adults. The many effects lead has on children and adults are very drastic if not taken care of properly they could have lifetime effects. Dangerous effects lead can lead to that effect children.
This effect over the years can ;provide a more safe and healthy enviroment for future
Many different processes produce air contaminants. Dust and fiber are two types of solid particles that may be of concern depending on their nature. Chemical hazards can have several methods of exposure either through skin contact, ingestion, absorption by the skin, and/or by breathing them in. Due to their hazardousness, chemical substances are identified by Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and are required in the workplace for reference. Biological hazards are living organisms and enter the worker which can cause infection and disease.
They argue that since only the wealthy could afford to have lead pipes bring water into their homes and to cook with lead utensils, their death rate was increased considerably” (Doc 7.8). One death cause of the Romans was lead poisoning. Many Romans died from this, which led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. According to Document 6, nearby barbarians, the Huns, the Visigoths, the Franks, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vandals, and the Northmen,
The Romans used lead for many things, the lead was inexpensive and was used in the piping that brought water to Rome, they had lead utensils and lead-lined pots that they used to boil down wine, lead was also found in makeup and the pigment of paints. Some symptoms of lead poisoning were: anemia, lameness, brain swelling, and pallor. The Romans did realize that the lead could cause health problems and even death, but they believed that as long as they weren 't exposed to high levels there was only a low risk of getting lead poisoning, what they did not understand was that being exposed low-levels of lead daily can still cause some of the symptoms of lead poisoning. The people who were getting exposed to the higher level of lead poisoning, from
It is not uncommon to hear about pollution today in America? When we watch our television there are always broadcast about oil spills and poor air quality, and how their are communities suffering from these pollutants. It is easy to watch the screen and think,” Wow! I am so glad we are not in that situation”. But the truth is contrary to this statement, there are harmful toxins being released into everyone’s community that often go unnoticed by residents in the area.
Summary: Today, millions of people in Flint, Michigan are exposed to the poisonous waters containing lead. Many residents have been affected by this, and one of them is a man named Aaron Stinson. Doing whatever he can to stay healthy, he drinks lots of water throughout the day, avoiding sweets and unhealthy foods. But little does he know how much of the water he 's drinking contains lead which is harmfully destroying his body each time.
Nevertheless, Chapter 1 tries to understand why atrazine, DDT, and PCBs are some lead causes of the
This element is extremely toxic which creates greater concern regarding health. A few effects of lead on the human body are damage in brain development, certain learning skills for children, behavior in adults and children, high blood pressure, reproduction, and the growth of adults and children (“Department of Ecology,” 2007-2011). As arsenic and lead have risky effects, mercury, petroleum related compounds, and PCBs also have fatal
Of particular relevance is the need to assess whether products, processes, situations and activities could increase the risk of significant health consequences for human populations. The department of health in Western Australia has endorsed the use of health risk assessments of potential impacts to health during the planning stages of new developments and to evaluate activities where potential risks to health are being considered (Henrici, 2005). The processes outlined in this document provide a more specific characterization of potential risks to the public than currently available and being developed to assist proponents and others required to undertake formal impact assessments for new developments. These processes may also be useful for other forms of assessments where risks to the public are being considered. Users are also referred to the following publications when undertaking risk assessments for health: health risk assessment in Western Australia (department of health) environmental health risk assessment: guidelines for assessing human health risks from environmental hazards (ehealth council, department of health and aging).
Structures The air pollution is attached with government and people. According to the Canadian encyclopaedia, the sources of air pollution include industry, transportation, domestic activities (e.g., heating, cooking, wood smoke), agriculture (fertilizers, blowing dust, pesticides, herbicides, animal waste, farm odours) and forestry (pesticides, forest fires). Air pollutants are substances that, when particle present in the atmosphere in sufficient quantities, may dangerous impact on people and animals. Government try to reduce the emission by implementing some laws.
