THE LEADER AS MOTIVATOR: CRITICALLY EXAMINE THE ROLE OF THE SERGEANT
INTRODUCTION
“The task of a leader is to take his people from where they are to where they have not been.” (Kissinger)
Motivating others is an important aspect of leadership. To remain competitive, organizations must rely on both individuals and team to add value beyond the basic functions of the job. However, it is not enough to expect people to do this automatically. Leaders must create an environment that speaks to the psychology of large groups who should be rowing in the same direction. It is with this view that this paper seeks to examine the whole concept of the leader as a motivator in relation to the role of the sergeant in the execution of his duties duly assigned to him. Motivational skill, without a doubt, is one of the main leadership qualities that a leader should possess. A leader who possesses strong motivational skills will positively influence his subordinates to such an extent that they can achieve even higher goals than expected. From examining the role of the Sergeant, one can conclude that the role of the Sergeant in any military organization is critical to the success and development of the organization. The knowledge, motivational skills and most importantly, the experience of the sergeant contribute significantly to the motivation and development of the junior ranks and ultimately, to the development of the Guyana Defense Force as an
