For the Leader Shadowing Case Study, I chose to shadow Dennis Riethman. Mr. Riethman resides in Coldwater, Ohio, where he lives with his wife. Mr. Riethman’s professional history starts back when he graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriscience Education in 1979. He later went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Agriscience Education four years later in 1983. Right out of college, Mr. Riethman stepped into a teaching job as an Agriscience Instructor back in his hometown of Coldwater where he advised the Coldwater Tri-Star FFA Chapter. He was very involved in the FFA and Tri-Star programs and taught numerous courses throughout his years there. Some of these courses include Production Agriculture, Structural Engineering, Mechanics, Animal Science, Plant Science, and Horticulture. After teaching at Coldwater for thirty-five years, Mr. Riethman retired. Soon after retirement, there was a job opening through the Mercer County Extension Office and Mr. Riethman was told by a friend to apply. Because he was familiar with the position and maintained his ties with the Ohio State Extension through his teaching job, he …show more content…
Riethman encourages and embraces diversity with open arms. This diversity is mainly the new practices and technological advances seen throughout the agricultural industry. Mr. Riethman also pointed out that there is a big difference between country life and city life. While these two groups of people could possibly have very different views on certain topics, as the extension educator, Mr. Riethman has to remember to always treat both sides of the spectrum with the utmost respect in all cases. He preaches that everyone is a person and every person is entitled to their own unalienable rights in which nobody can deny. Although it is not his place to settle disagreements, it is his duty to make sure both sides are fully educated with accurate and up-to-date
The special topics course that freshman would be required to take would be called “Farms, Factories, and Food.” This course would be an exposure of the grim realities of the modern agricultural industry. Students would be made aware of the extreme mistreatment, and in some cases even torture, of animals in food factories. This course would also include discussions about how large agriculture companies use lobbyists and dark money to change public policy in their favor, instead of what is best for the American people. The course would also entail discussions about government policies towards different food such as corn, which is used in sugar and gasoline, along with pizza, which is legally considered to be a vegetable.
We have a great influence as we meet many people throughout the year. My main goal in the promotion of agriculture
By putting this recommendation into action now, I expect to become more connected to my coworkers, more visible to upper management, and more capable of making effective decisions in future leadership positions. Finally, my third change will be taking a more energetic approach to furthering my education, so I am able to have the skills I need to make effective decisions with the two-up, two-down approach in mind (Schmalz, 2015, np). In order to understand the goals and motivators of those above me, I need to learn more about their responsibilities and habits. Running Head: C200 TASK 2: LEADERSHIP ANALYSIS 11 “Leadership behavior stems from habitual neural pathways that are developed over time.
Transactional Leadership Frequently referred to as a managerial approach to leadership, the transactional leadership style is centered on improving efficiencies within an organization or team (McShane & Von Glinow, 2015). Leaders practicing the transactional approach focus on the details of the step by step processes and workflows using a reward and punishment system to encourage workgroup production (Dartey-Baah, 2015). As errors and inconsistent results are part of the expected norm, transactional leaders succumb to the belief that employees require ongoing monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance with the expected work practices. When used with an experienced high performing staff, the constant supervision and punitive nature of the transactional leadership style can be counterproductive, causing a decrease in production and satisfaction among some groups. In contrast, when used with newly formed production units, the transactional style has been known to improve employee engagement and response (Breevaart et al., 2014).
In today's world, the citizen has experienced bad or good leaders. The role of the leader has the extensive knowledge of understanding the leadership situation and influence other complete tasks. The important factor of the leader is to gain power. Power referred as the individuals capacity to move others, to entice others, to persuade and encourage others to attain specific goals or to engage in the specific behavior. Leader power is the capacity to influence and motivate others ().
Nice discussion post this week! You start off with a great definition of what leadership is. To me, it is hard to define what leadership is, especially in one sentence, but I agree with you that leadership is the action of leading others or an organization. I feel like it is when someone steps up and goes into the unknown as well. It is also important to mention that it is never just one single person.
