“A true leader’s leadership is an inside – out conscious exercise and an effort that starts with leading oneself to do the right thing and at the right time or that which must be done to achieve a desired end or an outcome.”[1] (Theo H. Veldsman, Andrew J. Johnson, Thulisile Nomkhosi Madonsela, 2016) leadership is a major component or in other words an essential element of all organizational structures ranging from small scale business firms to large and intricate ones. I feel that without leadership a commercial agency or the society as a whole is stripped of the ability to perform and achieve its major goals and objectives efficiently and effectively. The senior management of a firm have to be very careful to ensure that people they recruit …show more content…
In my opinion leadership is a trait where an individual working within an organization as an employee has the ability to lead people in a manner that enables the organization to achieve its goals and objectives. A leader guides his/ her team members, provides them with the opportunities to learn from mistakes, provide positive feedback and also to exercise authority wherever needed. In addition to this a leader should also possess sufficient management skills to manage the work of his/ her team members and also to cope up with stress and change. I feel that affluent leaders are born and then made or refined into successful heads who carve the way for organizational success. …show more content…
This is that stage of a leaders life where I feel that leaders are born because the capability to tell someone who opposes your views or opinions given that you’re superior in authority to them requires a strong headed individual with the power to justify a given task and get their official power into action – A natural authoritative skill by birth. According to the article the author agrees with me – leaders are partly born and partly made. From a theoretical perspective leaders are born and not made. Leaders come into this world with skills and competencies that they already have within them. Qualities that are not developed but which they acquire naturally by birth. The other side of the theoretical perspective suggests that leaders are made and not born. Behavioral Theories propose that leadership skills can be developed through experience, training and development, coaching, teaching etc. there may at times be constraints that hinder a leader from performing up to the mark. For instance, you may be leading a firm where your actual leadership abilities are not being properly utilized or highlighted. As a result, a leader may feel demotivated. The Behavioral Theory states that leadership is all about choice. A leader may be a person from within a crowd that may come forward to take the responsibility for leading. The author’s personal experience also resembles
Trait theory states that leaders are born, and they are not made. Everyone has the personality that can give them leadership positions. With the right condition, anyone can be a good leader (Colbert, et al.
Some leaders are developed through lifetime lessons. They are brought up in strong family core values, that they pass on to others. They have great role models
Leadership is the ability of one to organize or lead a group of people. A leader should be respectful, a leader is bound to know what goal is attempted to be reached. My favorite leadership quote is by Chris Hadfield, “Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It 's about keeping yourself and people around you focused on a goal and motivated to do the best to achieve goals in life, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences matter greatly. It is about laying the groundwork for others ' success, and finally standing back and letting them shine.”
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.
Those individuals who were believed to have these inherent skills were people of very influential status, wartime heroes and those of great wealth. The people who emerge or are most picked to lead have distinctive drives and character profiles (Nicholson, 2013, p.16). Leadership Thought Development from 1900 – 1970 The thought of leadership evolved from the Great Man Theory to Trait Theory and Behavior Theory. The trait theory focuses on identifying distinctive personality traits and characteristics that are associated to successful leadership.
In this regard, leaders and managers can appear at any level of an organisation and are not exclusive of each other (Germano, 2010). Leadership theories identify leaders based upon traits as well as how their influence and power is used to achieve organizational goals and objectives (Germano, 2010). As such, trait based characteristics include leaders such as autocratic, democratic, bureaucratic and charismatic. On the other hand, leadership that is viewed from the perspective of the exchange of power and its utilisation to secure outcomes, are situational, transactional and transformational leaders (Germano, 2010). It is of paramount importance to consider the different types of theories of management and leadership and their potential impact on organizational strategy being that management and leadership plays a vital role in the success of businesses.
For example The role of leading your siblings because you are the first child is not by choice you just become a leader in that situation by birth. Although someone might argue that for some leadership positions a person has to choose to run for that position. I think this perception only applies to big leadership positions which constitute a minimal number of leadership positions. As I think back to my leadership journey, From childhood to now i realise i never once said i want to be the leader.
Individual Reflective Paper Introduction Leadership, a controversial concept, has been studied for centuries. Scholars who study leadership have argued with the insight of leadership for many decades and finally promote a wide range of understandings of it. LEADERSHIP Ogbeidi (2012) found that leadership is referred as “ability to lead, direct and organize a group”. The study of leadership has developed scientifically through changing paradigms during its history where several models and theories have tried to explain the concept of leadership. Kuchler (2008) acknowledges that although subject of leadership is diverse and somewhat scattered but it tends to be one of the most widely discussed topics by the researchers all over the world. We found myriad definitions of leadership after studying detailed literature on it. The concept of leadership is described by different researchers with different perspectives.
This paper will examine the three leadership theories, identify how they apply to my practice, and explore how these theories interact with each other. The Trait Leadership Theory is based on the belief that a person is born with special traits contributing to natural leadership abilities. Studies of famous historical leaders have been used to identify various traits for this theory. Although the list of traits differs from study to study, there are five major traits that are consistent throughout most studies.
Introduction Leadership is the art of empowering people around you to achieve a goal. As a leader I want to help others become leaders themselves. I firmly believe that by leading based on my values this will be accomplished. I have had many leadership influences throughout my career. Some of them showed me the way I wanted to someday lead and others showed me exactly how not to.
This paper is going to encompass different leadership theories and their relevance to my own personal personality and method of leadership. There will be information on the advantages and disadvantages of the leadership theories and information on each including examples. The purpose of this paper is to view various kinds of leadership theories and apply them to a real-life scenario. Leadership Theories There are quite a few different leadership theories available for people to take information from and use in business settings and even personal settings.
Leadership: Definition Leadership is the process of influencing the motive of the employees and so directing, guiding them to the proper completion of the short-term goals and the mission, vision of the firm. Leadership referring to achieve a specific set of goals of the business enterprise by minimizing risk and more advantage of opportunities is also called Entrepreneurial Leadership (Rao, 2015). Today leadership is such an iterative process when the leaders should have a variety of qualities and expertise in different area of management. Here, different theories will be explained which can clearly identify the scope, the responsibilities and the area of expertise required to be successful leader.
If the behavior theory can identify the key determinants of leadership, people can actually train to become a leader. This is the premise of the management development plan. There are many different types of behavioural leadership styles. Each style suggests that the leadership role is based on the leaders’ concern for the people being led and the level of achievement that needs to be
‘Organizations provide its managers with legitimate authority to lead, but there is no assurance that they will be able to lead effectively’ (Lunenburg, 2011). Organizational success usually requires a combination of both management and leadership. In today’s dynamic work environment, leaders are expected to challenge the present state of affairs, and to motivate and convince organization members. Managers are needed to assist in creating and maintaining a positive and well-functioning workplace. ‘Leadership and management are often considered practically overlapping concepts’ (Bohoris and Vorria, 2007, p. 1).
