What constitutes an effective leader? This question is a focus into nursing leadership competency. Nursing leadership competency are leadership skills and behaviors that contribute to superior performance. Nursing leaders are crucial in implementing an empowered and pleased nursing workforce with positive nursing work environments (Laschinger, Wong, Cummings, & Grau, 2014). A focus on leadership competencies and skill development promotes better leadership and high quality, safe health care (Disch, 2017). The leadership style that is chosen affects staff, patient, and organizational outcomes (Laschinger et al., 2014). Emotional competence holds a high level of emotional intelligence, character of strength, strong moral ethics, and optimism (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). An environment where there is lack of unity and poor leadership support lacks an emotional competence framework and therefore has increased work-related stress (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). An environment where emotional competence is demonstrated by nursing leadership, decreased emotional exhaustion, lower levels of burnout and turnover, and reduced levels of incivility are fostered (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). Emotional competence skills are formed through the use and application of personal and social competencies of emotional intelligence (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). Emotional competence is not demonstrated by highly qualified clinical nurses due to stress and lack of desire to act on their motivation for emotional competence (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). For a person to begin to move toward emotional competence, self-examination is necessary (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). Empowerment is attainable when nurses demonstrate optimism and emotional competence (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). Nurses that are emotionally competent are motivated to develop a competence plan and in turn display a more hopeful point of view of life, gain personal and social competence through the use of emotional intelligence, and exhibit empathy toward others (Beckham & Riedford, 2017). Emotional competence must be demonstrated by all nurses of the organization to allow for renovation of the healthcare atmosphere (Beckham & Riedford, 2017).
