From the disasters that happen once in a lifetime to those we face every day, a person may think that these things will not happen to them but thinking that the unthinkable won’t happen does not help if it does. The truth remains that in its occurrence, whether natural, manmade or technological, a vast number of people are vulnerable to its many effects. Emergency management promotes pre-planning and preparedness which allows for the mitigation of the effects of disasters. Emergency management and more importantly, preparedness and mitigation efforts at the community level are critical to the survivability of those who may be affected. In every aspect of life there are leaders and there is need for leadership, within the scope of emergency …show more content…
An effective leader is one who is able to motivate the team, maximize effectiveness, identify problems and provide solutions, treat team members with respect and be honest while providing an environment of togetherness and transparency. Dr Rex Campbell, sociology professor at the University of Missouri, has stated that effective leaders have a variety of characteristics with the ability to motivate others and good communication skills being the top …show more content…
The community was engaged by using a whole community approach. A whole community approach is, “a means by which residents, emergency management practitioners, organizational and community leaders, and government officials can collectively understand and assess the needs of their respective communities and determine the best ways to organize and strengthen their assets, capacities, and interests”. Some of the stakeholders this approach attempts to engage and partner with are; businesses, non-profit organizations (NGO’s), faith based organizations (FBO’s), the general public and government institutions. Some benefits of a whole community approach are; everyone is more informed about the dangers around them, their needs and their capabilities; and increased resources through the empowerment of the community members, resulting in a more resilient
Eller et al. (2018) explain that emergency management involves creating a framework for communities to reduce vulnerability to disasters and hazards and cope with them. For instance, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) capabilities in Southeast Fairbanks County are vital towards building proficiency in software

By educating the public about the handling and dangers of natural disasters people can be better prepared in the event a disaster happens. Furthermore, the FEMA organization can allocate more resources toward training, planning, and educating the public. In an article by Michael Greenberg and colleagues the text states, “Engineering, planning, and resiliency know-how will never be sufficient to buffer certain locales from disasters. Hence, political leaders need credible evacuation plans for people and crucial capital when disasters are deemed both certain and imminent” (Greenberg et al. 86-87).
Remarkable topics highlighted in this LMS are as follows; hazard identification, emergency leadership, emergency operations center and disaster
In order to build strategies and skills for resilience to disaster in a community you must be able to observe the disaster from beginning to end to know the pros and cons of the aftermath. Being able to mitigate and rebound back to previous state of being is half the battle. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina showed us how vulnerable we were by revealing our core issues with lack of trust and the nonexistence relationship with the community groups and establishments, religious groups, and other organizations in the communities that created difficulties in community’s relationship. As a concept, community resilience offers an outline that embraces philosophies of equity and social justice with an emphasis on developing the majority of populations
Emergency preparedness can be defined as pre-impact activities that establish a state of readiness to respond to extreme events that could affect the community. It establishes organizational readiness to minimize the adverse impact of these events by means of active responses to protect the health and safety of individuals and the integrity and functioning of physical structures. The emergency preparedness is achieved by planning, training, equipping, and exercising the emergency response organization. That is, members of the DRRMO establish the basic plan, annexes, and appendixes of the jurisdiction’s EOP, train members of the emergency response organization to perform their duties, and test the plan’s effectiveness with emergency exercises.
Context: When disasters strike, depend on how terrible it is and in many cases there is a need for more than one organization or agencies to respond, this necessitate the need for smooth coordination and collaboration of resources. Hence, the need for leaders whose span of thinking, influence, competence and achievement are broaden afar form their formal bound of authority to effectively and successfully bring all organizations needed together to accomplish a common purpose. Thus, meta-leadership is the framework needed to accomplish such tasks. Marcus, Dorn, & Henderson (n. d) states that meta-leaders entails a different approach or way of thinking, exceptional set of skills, and a solid and reliable network to encourage cross-agency thinking
Traumatizing yet inevitable, natural disasters devastate the economy, environment, and predominantly, the people. These unfortunate incidents can, however, induce a means for unity to develop. Hardship is bound to conceive a goal that everyone can strive for. Ideally, each individual would rise to the occasion and contribute from the goodness of their heart, but in reality, such selflessness is rare. The majority requires some form of external motivation to help when their own comfort is not at risk.
Having an effective leader at the helm of a group of people is an important part of being successful. The best leaders are inspirational, patient, confident, open-minded, decisive, personable, positive, and a smattering of other great qualities. Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi’s profound quote regarding leaders still sticks out to me “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” A true leader is gritty and persistent enough to find what really motivates people to become the most successful they can be.
Data provided in the simulation material show how effectively the government building is important for the community. First, the emergency management operations is in the basement of the building. A disastrous flooding can hamper all emergency response efforts because emergency managers will not be able to conduct operations properly unless this critical facility is relocated before the hazard impact as advised Lindell, Prater, and Perry (2007). Second, the building hosts the city, the county, the state, and the federal governments, which are the most important institutions that take part in disaster processes and allocate most of the resources needed for emergency and disaster management as said Waugh Jr. and Tierney (2007). It is known that other partners are among the stakeholders for disasters, but these officials’ actions and supports are very important to deal with an emergency and a disaster.
It is a continual form of planning, organizing, training, equipping, exercising, evaluation, and improvement that will ensure effective coordination and enhancement of capabilities to prevent, protect against, respond to, recover from and, mitigate the effects of natural disasters, man-made disasters and, acts of terrorism (The four phases of emergency management, n.d.). Emergency managers develop plans to manage and counter the risks and act to build the needed capabilities to implement the plans (The four phases of emergency management, n.d.) The public sector can enhance preparedness by making sure proper maintenance and training is given to all emergency services, by developing emergency population warning methods, by preparing shelters and evacuation plans for communities and, by stockpiling, inventory, and maintain disaster supplies and equipment (The four phases of emergency management, n.d.) Some of the benefits of preparedness would be having better trained emergency personnel, allow the public to be educated in emergencies, having better vehicles and equipment and, by developing and maintain better communication systems (Four phases of emergency management,
I am an Assistant Medical Officer (AMO) working in Emergency Department at a district hospital located in rural East of Malaysia. I’ve been working for 8 years. In emergency department, we work in a team that comprise of various disciplines such as Emergency Physicians, Nurses, Assistant Medical Officers and others. In this essay I will define and analyze about leadership in my practice area. A leader profile from my practice area will be described using transformational theory.
Unity of effort is an essential concept in emergency management to provide a rapid and coordinated response. Different types of disasters will require different levels of response, capabilities, and command relationships. Hurricane Katrina will always be remembered by history as one of the most destructive, expensive, and tragic events our country has ever encountered. But with a strong determination, unity of effort, and effective organizational change, the true legacy of Katrina can be that of a catalyst that triggered a real and lasting improvement to our national
One of the most important characteristics of a good leader is that they must be actually prepared to lead under any circumstance. This sounds like something that should go without saying, but it is surprising just how many people who are in a leadership role are not prepared to take an active role in leading their team. A good leader does not sit back and observe what is going
To be a successful leader I also agree that one needs to have certain characteristic and skills. A leader needs to be able to simple lead, as you have stated. They need to direct and guide people to fulfill shared goals. Communication is also another huge skill. A leader needs to be able to clearly communicate, build relationships, motivate others, inspire others, and be a role model to create a positive work environment and culture that will accept change and innovation in the company.
