Many know about the idea of the "monomyth," or the hero's journey as an outline for many of our modern books, movies, t.v. series, etc. Joseph Campbell's definition for the hero's journey is, "the quintessential (or best example) of an archetypal myth. " The Disney film Hercules is one of the best examples of Joseph Campbell's monomyth. For instance step one of the hero's journey outline is the Ordinary world. Hercules was born the son to Zeus and Hero.
The hero’s journey is a common theme in many mythological novels that convey the adventures the protagonist experiences as they resolve their conflicts in attempt to become their own savior. As the novels go about the hero’s decisive crisis and victories, the protagonist is often subjected to develop as he grows mentally from learning from his problems. In the novel, Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, the story of Antonio exhibits how coming of age can be difficult. As Antonio grows older, he learns that there are many obstacles he must face and surpass, and to aid him with these challenges is his mentor, the curandera, as she brings about the mythical aspects.
The quest starts with a protagonist who needs something or someone to import. It requires tremendous amount of effort to gain. The protagonist calls for someone to manage the quest or he might go on the quest by himself. A long and tiring journey continues on which the protagonist goes alone or with comrades. The protagonist usually has to overcome difficulties during the journey either before the object is gained or after the object is gained.
Mythology is the collection of myths that denotes commonly cultural and religious beliefs of ancient human beings. The elements of it were usually the involvement of god, goddess and heroes. In addition, it was based on a man’s desire, beliefs and ideas. It also told the natural occurrence and its main purpose was to teach people moral lessons. One of the example of Greek mythology is the divine hero of ancient Greece his name was Heracles, but people knew him as Hercules.
Throughout the story “The Odyssey” by Homer Odysseus, the main character counters countless amounts of trouble. As king and leader it is his job to keep his men save and get the job done. Odysseus does whatever it takes to keep his men unharmed, and more importantly, alive. All his crew and him dream about is getting back to their homeland, but first they have to pass the obstacles. Odysseus demonstrates good leadership qualities by doing whatever it takes to get the job done, using his advanced cunning abilities to trick his enemy, and constantly saving his crew from dangers.
The Odyssey, a Greek epic involves the story of Odysseus's daring adventures during his return to Ithaca. He fell into numerous difficulties and has to keep himself alive. In the Odyssey Homer changes the Crew in order to reveal his message that strong minded leaders can help the weak minded to his ancient Greek audience and the reader. Strong minded leader help the weak minded develops from when they got tied up by Odysseus, to when the Cyclops ate one of their men in the Cyclops then to where Helios made them sacrificed one of their cattle for him, even though the crew does get distracted sometimes during the journey.
The concept of hero and villain has existed for as long as the histories of humanity could remember. However, for the past years film has become one of the dominant media of our culture and history to foretell the epic about heroes and their saga. Many film made their appearance by daringly imposing the famous heroic epic which eventually made into many versions due to how popular the epic, by reflecting on that then it is logical to see many Ramayana and Mahabharata versions streaming through the televisions or the cinemas. Through the time we may find that the hero we know has become more “human” and more fallible over time, those heroes are constantly changing entity; the same concept of heroicness traits but with different settings and
Hercules: Disney’s Westernization of Culture A young woman, beautiful and perhaps perfect in appearance, finds herself in a troubling situation. During her stroll through the forest, she was captured by a centaur. This centaur Nessus, keeps a strong grasp on the woman. A traveling hero encounters the struggle, defeating the beast.
Guilt causes people to act as if they were in debt. Often times they help other in an attempt to empty their feelings of shame. Other people have compassion. This sympathetic behavior acts upon their willingness to help others because the person cares, not to rid themselves of shame. Between the two Greek heroes, Theseus is greater, possessing compassion to others while many of Hercules’ actions are fueled by guilt.
Most people believe that wearing a vibrant uniform, with badges on pinned on your chest or medal around your neck makes you stand out, or having your name upon a board with broken records makes you a great leader. You can be as simple as a parent, a teacher, a coach, even just your plain self. These everyday people show leaderships by directing others of their mistakes, aiding or supporting someone in need, and encouraging us to lead others. Odysseus would be example in the Odyssey when he show his soldier a plan to escape the cyclops. He does this by aiding this soldiers to get the cyclopes drunk, created lies with their crazy identities so the one-eyed monster brother’s would think he insane if he tried to call for help, blinded him by gouging a olive tree in his eye, and tied himself, and his men on to the cattle so when, the monster lets them out they can escape with them to.
In the book Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury, a character voices his opinion of the abnormality of society through a famous greek legend known as the 7 tasks of hercules of which one story depicts a seemingly invincible man but with not only his strength but mind helped him prevail. Hercules defeats his adversary by displacing his enemy from the earth and lifting off away from his nature which correlate tremendously with the dystopian society of Fahrenheit 451. In relation to the 7 tasks of hercules , one of Hercules tasks was his battle against Antaeus, Hercules had to defeat a man of incredible strength more so than even him, but when Antaeus was away from his natural habitat the earth he was weak, just as the people in fahrenheit displaced from their knowledge are weaker as they had no books or thought provoking emotional times, thus being displaced from their habitat of knowledge censored from real life as a whole.
The Greeks are known for constructing tales of great heroes who accomplish what seems to be impossible feats. Two of the most well known of these heroes are the protagonist of Homer’s novel the Odyssey, Odysseus King of Ithaca and the mighty demigod hero Hercules son of Zeus. These two characters are like an orange and tangerine. That is due to both of them having a plethora of similarities as well as differences ranging from traits, to accomplishments, and history. What makes a hero isn't there powers, but rather the path they have chosen to guide their actions.
The Odyssey written by Homer speaks of one of the most iconic Heroes in storytelling to this day. This character, Odysseus, is known very well as being a remarkable leader. This is a very true, solid statement about Odysseus because of his ability to influence people, through trickery and solid courage. As all great leaders have their strengths, many have just as much or more weaknesses. Furthermore this is very true with Odysseus, especially since his weaknesses seem to change, and keep him unsure about many things.
