Human nature can be described in many different ways. Every human is born with their own leadership qualities. Some of those qualities are much better than others.Human nature along with leadership is displayed throughout The Lord of the Flies. In William Golding’s novel The Lord of The Flies, Ralph and Jack, who both want to be leaders, are trying to convince the boys on the island to follow their ways of leadership which are very different.
Ralph and Jack are both wanting to be leaders in this novel. They are both very different but they also are very similar. The similarity is that they both want to be leaders but they are stuck in their ways about leading. Both Jack and Ralph want better for the island. In the beginning of the novel The Lord of the Flies Ralph says, “Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things.”Golding 20. Right after ralph says that Jack says, “ I ought to be chief because i'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp.”Golding 20 Both of those quotes from the book show that the both really have the desire to be a leader on this island.

Jack has more of a primitive view on surviving on the island that it is all about hunting and keeping the fire going. he doesn't really do anything to keep the rest of the boys happy. While Ralph on the other hand is a little more civilized in that he does things like he wants to build shelter for the boys and does things to look out for the boys. Both of their ways can be liked and disliked by the boys on the island. For example this quote from the book explains Jack's primitivity. “ He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling.”Golding 61 An example of Ralph’s way of leadership is also shown in a quote in the book. “ Which is better -a pack of painted Indians like you or to sensible like Ralph is?” Golding 174 Both of those quotes show the leadership qualities of both Ralph and
Jack and Ralph are two of the main leaders in the book Lord of the flies. The most effective and consistent leader in the book is Ralph. He is always trying to find ways to make thing better and Jack on the other hand he is trying to do the same thing as Ralph is but Ralph is just doing it better. This kind of leadership is kind of like the two president’s into today’s election they both are trying to make the world better in their ways. Ralph is also very upfront with what he is saying for instance he say in the book “the thing is fear can’t you more than a dream” that is pretty up front with saying it doesn’t hurt you to dream and Jack is saying “I am going to make rules and who ever breaks them shall be punished” that isn’t what a good leader
The only person who had some insight into Ralph’s disposition was Piggy because he had spent time with him prior to the meeting. This shows leadership is not limited to those who fit the role. Leadership is solely decided on a person’s persona. Furthermore, the stranded boys chose Ralph because according to the author, “there was a stillness” about him “that marked him out,” they noticed and took a liking to his “size and attractive appearance” (Golding 22). No one questioned Sorine 2 the decision to choose Ralph as chief, they relied on the way he seemed.
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, there are many possible leaders. Ralph’s adversary on the Island had been Jack, who had been pushing to take over as leader. This caused a lot of controversy among the common people on who is the more powerful leader, rather than the most effective. Throughout the book Ralph has proven to be the better leader in two ways; he’s civilized and organized.
In Golding's Lord of the Flies, leadership is needed in society to functions as shown through, “"Him with the shell." "Ralph! Ralph!" "Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing. "”(Golding 16).
”(103) at the end of the book in chapter eleven we read “I got this to say. You’re acting like a crowd of kids” this line perfectly representing what Jack wants to do and has created, a childish group doing whatever they want. Ralph wants to take everything seriously and wanting to provide with the necessaries like shelter and warmth and a way to get off the island while Jack wants to just let loose and have fun which consists of hunting, exploring, and playing games. These differentiating views lead to multiple arguments between the two that weren’t settled maturely, they screamed at each other, and they never got over their problems.
In the book Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, become stranded on an island. Ralph, a boy elected leader, attempted to form an organized democracy; however, he, and his society, failed. Jack, not purposely, created an organized system, that did in fact end up working quite well. He overthrew Ralph’s leadership and started his own hunting society. He had people join him, because he became aggravated when Ralph told him he was not killing the pigs for the meat that he wanted.
Secondly, Ralph is very determined. He wants what is best for the boys , so he has to want things done right and in a decorous fashion. Ralph wants the shelters to be finished, food to be gathered and/or hunted, the fire to stay ablaze to help them be rescued, but most importantly, he wants to pull their weight and contribute to the workload. Jack on the other hand, just wants to hunt and stay on the island forever having fun, which will ultimately dwindle the boys’ chances of getting off the island and going home. Ralph just wants what is best for the boys.
In the beginning of the novel we are introduced to two boys, Ralph and Jack, who both are english school boys. The boys both come from tightly wound civilization and have always had adult supervision. From the beginning it is clear the boys both have different personalities, where Ralph is a leader because he is obligated to be and Jack is not but fights for power. In the third chapter Ralph, along with the help of Simon, is building huts on the beach for survival. This shows Ralph wants to have civilization on the island and doesn't want to live like savages.
For example, when Ralph had been elected as a sachem, he felt Jack's disappointment of not being a leader, and then Ralph suggests Jack to be the leader of the hunters. From this situation, it is clear that Ralph has a reasonable level of proficiency in how to make people at his side. Likewise, Ralph has a good sense of treating people, and Ralph is a modest person. However, Ralph was really frustrated when the boys, including Jack and his hunters were not doing what they supposed to do. Ralph was tired about all the duties and responsibilities of being a leader.
Jack shares Ralph’s stubbornness and good-natured personality while Sayid and Ralph are shown to prioritize their leadership by using organization and prioritizing. One of the characteristics that helped Ralph survive on the island for as long as he did was his determined and stubborn personality towards civilization and order. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph showed his determined characteristic by upholding his position as the chief of the group of boys. “‘Let’s stay here-’ ‘Back to the shelter-’ ‘I’m tired-’ ‘No!’
Ralph is one of the oldest boys on the islands, he was elected as leader at the beginning of the book. Ralph treats all the boys with respect throughout the book even when he begins to lose sanity himself. Ralph organizes all the boys in hope to keep them alive until they get saved, he makes them build shelters, keep the fire burning, and keep them all fed. Constantly throughout the book Ralph tries to keep the boys civilized whereas Jack does the opposite.
Although Jack expresses strong desire to become chief, the boys elect Ralph as a leader, suggesting an air of charisma that made him worthy of his position. He believes a leader has to “think, be wise… grab at a decision”, someone who can look after others and keep the group in
The changing relationship between Ralph and Jack, the protagonist and antagonist in Lord of the Flies is one where these two boys at first seem like allies but quickly diverge and distance themselves apart and soon become completely at odds with one another. Due to the different approaches they take in the leadership of a group of boys stranded on an uninhabited island, the group splits into two opposing and even warring factions, showing the severity of their antagonism. In the beginning, relations between Ralph and Jack are not as hostile. When they explore their island, they appear to act like friends, fooling around and casually playing.
Leadership is something that stands out. Good leadership is always important. You always want to follow the strongest person in the group right? Well in the book called “Lord of the Flies” Ralph is a better leader than Jack. Some reasons include Ralph has a goal or clear vision of being rescued.
The first difference between Ralph and Jack is that they have different ways of organizing things on the island. Ralph wants to lead everyone to work together to get off the island in a civilized order. Jack also wants to lead everyone but not in the same, properly ordered way as Ralph. When they first meet on the island, everyone who was stranded on the island wanted to be organized into some type of governing body so that they were ordered.
