8. Transformational Leadership. The concept of transactional and transformational leadership were brought into being by Burns after an in depth study on political leadership. In Transformational leadership the leader influences the behaviour of the follower to achieve the goals of higher order, for example the good of the group or organization, and transcend the self – interest of basic needs. Admiral Horatio Nelson was noted for his ability to inspire and bring out the best in his men.
Military Leader George S. Patton Adaptive leadership is the drive to find ways to approach complex situations. Adaptive leaders are able to create cultural norms, great plans and expectations that cause positive transformation to occur. One of the greatest United States leaders that I found to uphold these traits would be General George S. Patton, reason being he was able to create new ideas that were able to drive incredible outcomes in a crucial time. On November 11th, 1885 the hardnosed man General George S. Patton was born. From the very beginning of his life General Patton knew that someday he wanted to be a military leader.
George Washington got raised from being a delegate to commander so he must have been acting and thinking like a leader while he was a delegate which led him to be commander after. Since George Washington became commander of the Continental Army, he began to have a small legacy. It was important that George Washington became the commander of the Continental
Leaders must apply the Army Values when leading soldiers because of the fact that it builds trust and a bond. The same goes for the soldiers, in order for them both to work as an effective team and to get the mission done efficiently they both must live by these values. Once these values are integrated in a soldier’s lifestyle, it becomes too easy to work as a unit. An example on how loyalty and respect fits in a day to day to situation would be, a soldier witnessing a misunderstanding with his or her team leader and a higher ranking NCO, the soldier knows that his or her team leader is in the right. The soldier shows loyalty by standing by their team leader and shows respect by approaching both their team leader and the higher ranking NCO with tact to explain the situation from their understanding and what they witnessed.
Legitimacy plays a part in leadership through the old adage ‘been there, done that’. A subordinate will want to know that their leader has walked the walk and is not just talking the talk. The ability to do the job of a frontline officer, pass through the ranks and develop the skills needed to become a leader is critical in the eyes of a follower (Pearson-Goff and Herrington, 2013). The fourth identified leadership characteristic, be a role model, coordinates in line with the first three. A supervisor should lead by example and act as they expect their followers to act.
With Sasha he uses both. By using direct characterization, he describes Sasha’s background, or history. But, the author also uses indirect characterization in his thoughts and actions. However, with the Colonel, the author uses indirect characterization. For example, just by the way the character is called by, Colonel, which is a military position, the author says that he is a very strong character who will always follow the law and do what is right, no matter the painful outcomes it may bring or to whom it may bring them to.
According to Allio (2012) good leaders require both competence and integrity. Leadership is defined as the accomplishment of a goal through the direction of human assistants (Prentice, 1961). Similarly, leadership is defined as an interaction between two or more members of a group that often involves a structuring or restructuring of the situation and the perceptions and expectations of members (Bass B., 1990). Leaders play important role as they are the one who develop an organizational culture of trust. In a way, they build a foundation of integrity and ethical standards in the organization (Waxler and Higginson, 1990).
